Fence line border planting

We're about to put a small fence up between driveways with our neighbour, and on our side, we will have a narrow border, which I'd like to plant up. I'll add some new top soil and soil conditioner as it won't be in great condition, but am stumped what to plant. Any ideas? I'm thinking fairly drought resistant planting interspersed with some bulbs for Spring colour. Should add that our driveway faces South, but the actual fence will face West...

I wouldn't bother with soil improvements. There are easy-care, long-flowering plants which require little to no maintenance, and will thrive in poor soil, and even in gravel with a sunny aspect.

Two suggestions:
-Californian Poppies (Eschscholzia Californica). Annuals which pop up every year from self seeding, and last throughout the spring and summer. They prefer poorer soil, as richer soil produces more foliage than flowers.
-Mexican Fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus). A semi evergreen perennial which will come back every year and flower from spring until the first frosts. It's known for its ability to thrive with little attention, tolerating drought and a long season of small, daisy-like blooms that change from white to pink and purple.

That's great thanks!! I love mexican fleablane and was thinking of putting that in, as it's a nice spiller on a border! Will take a look at the Californian poppies!

I love Californian poppies - the flower petals close up when it gets dark :)
(They do tend to spread quickly though)
