Can anyone tell me what this is? Four of them have sprung up in a straight line in my garden in the last couple of weeks and are growing rapidly. Given the speed at which they are growing, I think they’re a weed but, before I pull them up, I thought I’d check.
In case it’s not clear from the photo, they have pointed leaves with the outer ones up to a foot long. The newest leaves, at the heart, have a silvery sheen and are slightly fluffy. Ignore the purple flowers - they have fallen off the plant next to it! The pink flowers are from an adjacent miniature rose

Look like a type of foxglove to me

I think verbascum thapsis - great mullein. Big yellow spike of flower.

I agree actually. particularly if the leaves are "fluffy"

Chat GPT is very good for this, you can just take a photo and upload it ask it what it is.

Yes, Mullein. Gorgeous!

How about just asking the knowledgeable plant experts on the Mumsnet gardening board, which is what the OP is doing?

EveSix · 07/09/2025 19:15

Mullein.

RedwallMattimeo · 07/09/2025 21:45

Ah! It is a mullein. I had forgotten that a random long spiky yellow thing appeared in the garden last year and I had no idea what it was called. It has self seeded itself in a very equally spaced way! It can stay for now as it is filling a gap which would otherwise be empty until spring but then it will go.
Thank you!
