What to put behind a mound of earth to keep it away from the fence?

I’m currently redesigning a chunk of my garden and want to create a rockery corner, possibly with a little waterfall into a small pond. I have some earth being dug out, which I’d like to use as a base, but I don’t want this directly against the fence, plus one of the fences belongs to my neighbour, is in horrendous condition and will (hopefully) be replaced at some point, so need to not be blocking access to do that. The fence has gravel boards, so the very bottom isn’t an issue.

What can I use to make a solid backing for an earth mound? Marine ply covered in pond liner has been my only idea really!

Thanks!

Bricks?

Yes bricks could work, but I’ve never tried bricklaying so not sure whether I’d have to pay someone to do that.

I would use something like Kinley fort. This is a professional product but if you search metal manufacturers someone will be able to whip you up something similar with feet for retaining.

In that picture it’s used as edging so the feet are under the paving. However if you are doing a higher retention then you put the feet under the soil and it will act as a cantilever.

Ooh that looks interesting. Didn’t know that was a thing! I’ll look into that, price dependant, thanks.

Kinley won’t do it as quantities thing. But search online corten retaining or steel retaining / or edging depending on height and you will find something not too badly priced.

Thank you. It looks like what I need but I couldn’t think of the words to search.
