Hi, please can anyone help me identify whether this bamboo is a harmless clumping bamboo. It's just on the other side of our fence and close to our house so I'm hoping it's not harmful/invasive.

A need a picture of the ‘clump’ that will show if it’s a runner or a clumper - what shape is it growing in ?

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 04/09/2025 20:37

I was told by a surveyor that no bamboo is harmless to property. Given enough time and proximity even the clumping sorts are invasive.

Ask your neighbour to get rid of it or at least put in a root barrier.
Point out (nicely if possible) that they will be liable if it spreads on to your land.
It is known by the term “legal nuisance”. Your home insurance may well pay for you to sue them if this happens.
I speak from sad personal experience.

I have still had the buggering stuff pop up years after it was supposedly dug out in a previous property. I put roundup stump killer on any shoots which emerge.

I agree with @Mrsmunchofmunchington.
I didn't think any bamboo was harmless to property.

This is the best picture I can get a the moment as other plants are in the way. I may be able to get a better pic once a car moves out of the way!

I've attached a photo of a similar bamboo to ones just over our fence that is just across the road as I can get a better photo.

I’m not an expert but I chose to grow clumping bamboo - which doesn’t look like that - and this summer had to try to dig it out.
Ive put it in pots because then I can control it.
Had to dig it out as it had started to spread towards a neighbour’s fence and I don’t want complaints or costs associated so I got to it before it gets to that stage.
There are ways to control it.

sorry I can’t help be precise (hopefully someone else will) but that doesn’t look like clumping bamboo to me (from my experience).

We had a small row of what was said to be dwarf bamboo, it was for years until one part decided to grow to 6 foot plus and throw out runners everywhere, took us forever to remove it, looked very similar to the picture, would never grow bamboo again, they say it’s as bad as knotweed

NaranjaDreams · 07/09/2025 09:28

No bamboo is harmless.

Our neighbour had some in big ceramic pots. It grew through the bottom, under the fences and into the next four gardens. We had to absolutely destroy our garden pulling up all the grass to get the bamboo roots out, and it’s 110ft long. Next door sold recently, she didn’t pull it up, and it was noted on their survey. According to the surveyor, it’ll soon be noticeable, like Japanese Knotweed.

If we’d known it was there; we’d not have bought the house. It’s cost us a fortune. It’s so, so difficult to remove. It spreads quickly, and the roots are really strong.

dairydebris · 07/09/2025 09:28

All types of bamboo can be invasive, just some faster than others.

Try to get neighbors to take it out ASAP. The sooner it comes out, the easier the job will be.

( we just had to remove a large patch of 'clumping' near our fence, it had gone under fence and was pushing up through neighbors driveway. )

Get rid.

Arewenearlythereyet1 · 07/09/2025 09:31

Looks like the type my neighbours had next to our fence. It started to grow in our garden despite root barriers. They have removed it both their side and ours but we both need to monitor to see if it comes back, only takes a tiny bit left behind to start again apparently.

Shedmistress · 07/09/2025 09:33

Bamboo will laugh its socks off at 'root barrier'.

It definitely needs digging out regularly to control it.

Wonderknicks · 07/09/2025 09:39

That's like my nightmare bamboo. Get them to get rid of it. I'm dreading the day we come to sell & they ask if we've got bamboo.

rainbowthunder · 07/09/2025 17:00

Thank you for your messages. I at last got photos of the bamboo from other side of fence as the car is not in the way now.
From all the comments it sounds like I need to get in touch with service company for the grounds and get them to remove.
