Hi, I hope one of you keen gardeners can help, I’m looking for a plant with some specific characteristics which are:-
Evergreen
Hardy
Approximately 70cm high, or can be kept at that height.
Non invasive
Happy to be in full sun
Tolerant of wind
Please let me have your suggestions, thanks.

Fatsia? How much wind - coastal?

Do you want it to flower? My mind immediately went to small evergreen shrubs such as euonymus, hebe or pittosporum. Maybe a salvia hot lips or similar if you want some colour?

Thanks, no not coastal but we live on the Thames and the wind can really whip across the river sometimes.

Thanks, I’m not bothered if it flowers. I’ll take a look at your suggestions. X

choisya - there are lots of types, they flower prettily and seem resistant to most things?

Geneticsbunny · 31/08/2025 16:16

Osmanthus? It has tiny white flowers but they smell amazing.

Euonymus 'Green Spire' or 'Jean Hugues'

I’d go with a hebe - one with small leaves.

WearyLady · 31/08/2025 17:04

Might be a little bit tall for you but I’d consider sarcococca. Tough, evergreen and with tiny, white strongly scented flowers in the winter. A real trooper!

Tooty78 · 31/08/2025 17:10

Another vote for Sarcococca, bomb proof and the glossy leaves are stunning!
Some Hebes are prone to frost.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 31/08/2025 17:13

Pittosporum, there are a few different varieties but they are well behaved with pretty little wavy leaves, don't get too big.
Salvia hotlips might not like your conditions, and interest is in the summer when it's in flower.
Agree with other suggestions, but if you like choisya watch out, it can get pretty big unless you get choisya Aztec pearl.

I have read sweet box doesn't like sun @Tooty78 @WearyLady which put paid to my plans of planting it out in my front, south facing garden.

An Abelia? Mine is very successful in an area that nothing much else likes.
