Will I regret going back to a corded lawnmower?

Garden is about 12m x 15m, mostly lawn but with flowerbeds, trees etc in the centre (so a lot for a cord to get tangled on).

I was very pleased with my cordless Gtech lawnmower, but the battery has only lasted a year and it’s £150 for a new battery.

Gtech says that’s a normal battery life, so I don’t really want to spend £150 per year on new batteries.

I can get a decent corded mower for about £80 (Flymo Speedo-mo), but will I regret it when I’m having to trail the cord all over the garden?

Yes. Easy answer.

Get a ‘knock off’ battery never seen any issues. Half the price at least.

Sundaybananas · 11/08/2025 20:04

Aw pants 😂

DH won’t have a knock off battery because he worries they’ll catch fire. He knows that probably won’t, but can’t get rid of the worry.

We have Bosch batteries that have been good in various power tools, including a strimmer, for years. Maybe they do something.

Love my karcher mower, batteries (I have a couple of other gardening tools from them) have been going strong for a few years now.

We have a McGregor cordless , got in on a good offer in Argos 2 yrs ago after our petrol one finally died . Couldn’t go back to corded .

Thanks for the recommendations - I’ll take a look at those.

Ryobi I could recommend too. They often sell with spare batteries on deals with Argos / direct. Good luck.

AlwaysGardening · 11/08/2025 22:23

I’ve had my Ryobi mower for 8 years and the batteries are still fine.

Don’t get Flymo. Bosch do great basic corded mowers, mine is over 10yrs old and going strong.

1 year for a battery isn't normal to me! I take it you've just gone past a 1 year warranty?

https://www.gtech.co.uk/garden-tools/lawnmowers/slm50-small-lawnmower-body-only.html they sell a body with battery for £70 here.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gtech-2-5Ah-Universal-Power-Battery/dp/B0C47MY6Y4 Amazon has one brand new in damaged packaging for £35.

Obviously check it's the same voltage etc.

Edited

Thanks - it’s this battery unfortunately, which is £160.

Yes, just over any warranty and apparently expected by the manufacturer.

Is that a 48V lithium-ion battery? It should definitely be at least 2-5 years. If you can be arsed, I'd look at the Consumer Rights Act which includes durability

Sorry am aware this is the gardening topic - I just get very annoyed at brands behaving badly! Will definitely never buy Gtech.

Consumer Rights Act 2015 - Which?

The Consumer Rights Act protects you in almost all purchases you make. Here we explain what it means when buying goods or services

I have a Bosch cordless. Currently on its 9th summer and still going strong - and my lawn is larger than your area (not bragging, just giving context).

I did buy two batteries at the time, just to ensure I could recharge one while still mowing with the other. Admittedly, they’re probably not holding their charge for quite as long now.

When they and/or the mower dies, I’ll definitely be getting another one.

Geneticsbunny · 12/08/2025 15:22

I totally agree with @Agapornis you should be able to get a refurd, repair or replacement from wherever you bought the mower from under the consumer goods act. There is no way you bought the mower assuming it would only last for a year and I am guessing the price you paid reflected this, so it was sold not fit for use and they legally need to refund, repair or replace.

My gtech mower is 9 years old still the original battery.
