Burning mouth after weeding gravel drive

Spent a small while weeding a patch of my gravel drive this afternoon. Came in a washed my hands, within half an hour the inside of my mouth was tingling. It quickly turned into a burning sensation that has lasted for several hours so far. It’s happened before after weeding the drive, any idea which weed is triggering it and how to stop the burning sensation please?

No idea. But why not kill the weeds a different way next time? Pour over boiling water, or sprinkle salt, or if you Google for it you can find a recipe for a water/salt/vinegar/washing up liquid solution you can make up in a watering can

Definitely stop pulling them up by hand if you have an allergy to something.

Have you taken an antihistamine?

WWomble · 10/08/2025 21:51

Thanks @CheesePlantFeet . I’ve already taken an antihistamine.

As to weed killing, it’s already been sprayed but it’s quite an area to tackle, so I’ve been going at a small area each day. I’ve had the same reaction in previous years, but this is the first this year. I’m pulling them up because nothing else is as effective!

Is it possible you are disturbing the poison you sprayed when you weed?

Haggisfish3 · 11/08/2025 00:18

Do you use gloves? Could be euphorbia or monkshood.

Is it a reaction to the weed killer you sprayed?

PinkCampervan · 11/08/2025 00:31

If you've got any, ragwort is also poisonous, goes in through your skin and affects the liver so if you're pulling that you want to be wearing gloves. Don't know if it'd affect your mouth though. Are you pulling up previously sprayed plants? I'd be concerned you're getting weedkiller poisoning if you're not wearing gloves (and maybe a mask since it's your mouth stinging).

Weed killer was sprayed at least a month ago. Will buy some gloves.

Having looked at ragwort, monkshood and euphorbia, it’s not the first 2 but it could be euphorbia.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Agree that the most likely culprit is Euphorbia helioscopia - annual sun spurge or 'mad woman's milk' - the sap is very milky and can cause severe irritation if you inadvertantly rub your eyes, mouth or any other orifice after handling it. It grows particularly well in gravelled areas, like driveways!

why dont you wear a mask another time?

A human would have to consume Ragwort it large quantities for it to become toxic. She’s having a reaction to the glyphosate in the weed killer by the sounds of it - which we know is highly toxic to humans and a proven carcinogen.

Thingyfanding · 11/08/2025 06:53

Euphorbia affects your skin if the sap from the plants goes on your skin and you’re exposed to sunlight - it can leave blisters, but I’ve handled it without gloves many times and it’s never happened to me.
It will be the residual powder from the glyphosate causing the irritation. It is a known carcinogen, too.
you don’t need to use it - you can just wait until it rains and the ground is soft and they will lift out easily. You’re just harming yourself and the people around you, as well as the soil and all life within it.

If you are having to pull weeds up even after having used weedkiller, then there's not much point in using it, is there? It clearly isn't working.
