Green paint for fence around small garden

Hello

I am looking to get my nondescript grey garden wooden garden fence (looks something like the attached pic from Google) green, since I am replacing part of it. The back garden is small - 10m x 10m including the patio and the fence runs 3 sides.

Is there a particular paint that will help make the garden feel larger? A friend suggested Cuprinol Old English Green, for example. Are there other similar shades I should consider? Looking for green, not a contrasting shade. I will have a border with shrubs, pleached trees eventually. Thank you.

Brand name - Bird Brand
Colour - Forest Green

lovely shade & easy to paint on. Bought a cheap paint sprayer 1000ml & watered down paint 3:1 to water and it was a breeze! Just be mindful of anything behind that may get caught in the spray

What’s your budget and how valuable is your time?

Ideally, you want something that looks great and lasts well. I’ve tried numerous DIY store garden paints over the years, and they’re generally pretty shit!

Bedec Barn Paint is great. They do lots of colours and have Matt, satin and semi-gloss finishes. I find the satin is best - “dry” dust, grass etc is easy to brush off (I find it “sticks” more to a Matt finish).

I get mine from Brewers and they’ll mix up any colour you want, so I’m doing quite a lot of outdoor stuff in RAL code 7002. It’s described as olive grey, but it’s a really nice shade of green that goes with pretty much anything and isn’t too in your face.

Is it a hedge or a wall on the fourth side? I know you say you want green, but green painted surfaces often actually stand out in the landscape - it's pretty hard to get one that disappears into the background, which it sounds like you want as you say you want your space to look larger? Have you considered a black or nearly black fence instead? I've included some images here to show how it recedes & the greenery stands out.

Oh, and make your borders as deep as possible & plant climbers where you don't have pleached trees in front (presume you know how expensive these are & how much ongoing maintenance these need re pruning etc?). The most effective way to make a garden look bigger is not acres of lawn, but disguising the boundaries/making them recede etc.

@EleanorMc67 I was going to suggest black, but held back. Am in the process of starting to paint my new fencing black, it looks like it’s really going to make the foliage stand out. Am looking forward to seeing the end result, once I actually get around to doing it!

I agree with your friend. Old English green is very organic looking and plants blend into an inoffensive background

@Whowahway123 I've just had a look at the Bird Brand website, really like the look of their paints and also they seem amazingly good value, so thanks for that as I'm about to move into a house that's got a fence and a few other garden bits and bobs that will need painting so I'm going to give their paint a try. Never heard of them before.

@IJWMM I don't plan to paint it myself- I am getting the garden fence level changed now (higher for better screening) so will get the landscaper to do it.
I have a dark grey fence now there isn't much growing on the border right now so can't judge how if it makes the garden feel larger.

@EleanorMc67 what climbers would you suggest for east facing and south facing fence - both get a good amount of sun? Most of the ones I thought of can be high maintenance - rambling rose, honeysuckle.

Just bear in mind that with a slated fence like in the picture, the paint is going to dribble into the neighbours side, so you may want to offer to paint both sides of the fence.
