Is anyone interested in my bind weed removal experiment?

I have Bind Weed growing in my raised beds! 2 years ago DH dug them out emptied them removed the bindweed & we refilled but it’s back!

I saw an insta reel on getting rid of it by growing it up canes & then weed killing it in a plastic bag!

so I’ve started my experiment!

Is anyone interested in my bind weed removal experiment?

@rockstarshoes . Thanks for the thread. Let me know how it goes. My garden is plagued with persistent bindweed so I would be interested in whether this works !

rockstarshoes · 03/08/2025 16:00

It’s such a nuisance isn’t it! I’ll keep updating! I put the bamboo stems in yesterday & wrapped the bind weed round it - so waiting for it to grow for now!

🙋‍♀️ Me too! Our garden is covered in it. I do my best to keep on top of it, but it feels like I’m losing the battle!

OddBoots · 03/08/2025 16:08

I don't have bindweed at the moment but I did see a SM post about this method so I ma interested in seeing how well it works.

yonem · 03/08/2025 16:10

Do you put the weed killer on the leaves still? The big problem with bindweed is that it comes back so easily from a tiny bit of root so I wonder if that is enough to kill the whole root system?

I use this method it works well. The only thing I would say is one day we had mega rain and wind which disturbed one of the bags so some weed killer seeped out onto a neighbouring plant. Didn't die but did suffer a little so definitely regularly check them. Maybe double bag with a larger one.

ArghhWhatNext · 03/08/2025 16:13

I’ve been doing a similar experiment but no weed killer yet. Every time the cane is full, I break it off at soil level and bin it. Each time it seems to grow back a little weaker. I think weed killer is best applied in autumn when it draws the product down into its roots as it goes dormant.

Allotmentannie · 03/08/2025 16:30

It's the most awful stuff.
I saw the insta reel too.

rockstarshoes · 03/08/2025 16:32

Great tip Mighty thank you! That has made me feel quite hopeful!

I have been following strands back & pulling out as much root as I can but it’s got so enmeshed with some of my plants, especially the cat mint which is constantly covered in bees that it’s impossible!

It seems to be a horrific year for bindweed this year. I've got it coming through from next door and I won't use weed killer, so I'm pulling it up whenever I can, but because I can't dig the roots out I am suffering! It particularly loves my hydrangea bushes - there's almost more bindweed than hydrangea out there now!

myplace · 03/08/2025 16:34

I saw the same method. I did however get rid of mine manually. It was near my front door so easy to pull a little out most days.

It’s a really easy pull, you don’t get dirty, so I’d gently tug it as far as I could before pulling it up.

I’d do a more thorough job if I was planting something nearby.

Over time there was less and less. I still see the odd shoot, and pull it out, but it’s one or two a year. No trouble at all.

Blobbitymacblob · 03/08/2025 16:38

I saw a video about that and I’m intrigued

Dearover · 03/08/2025 17:02

I've been battling it for almost 30 years, along with ground elder & spiky bamboo, all left as a gift from the previous owners. The highlight for me was pulling up some bindweed a few weeks ago only to discover it was attached to a wasps' nest. We've had 3 of those this year too.

Absolutely nightmare stuff. Have you noticed you never see it in the wild, so to speak. The rate it grows it should be covering all our woodland, growing up lampposts etc but it’s not! This is just one of the things that confuse me on a daily basis!
why only on cultivated land?
Bastard stuff!!!! Following with interest

c3pu · 03/08/2025 17:22

I got rid of bindweed in my back garden. Dug up what I could, it eventually came back after a few months and I blasted it with concentrated glyphosate.

Did the trick.

myplace · 03/08/2025 17:24

A neighbour was adamant that it only grew on one section of his hedge because he doesn’t interfere with it. It happily infests one shrub, flowers and generally thrives, without spreading.

I wonder whether the weeding just makes it desperately shoot wider?

Is this method safe if we have dogs?

finallygettingit · 03/08/2025 19:50

interesting, will look out for updates

NippyNinjaCrab · 03/08/2025 20:06

We have bindweed at the cottage we are moving too so following for updates! I was going to blast it with the Gallup stuff. There's also the awful mares tail!! Urgh.

Jellybean23 · 03/08/2025 22:21

It's a waste of time trying to dig out bindweed. The roots are so brittle and new plants sprout from the tiniest pieces left behind. Resist snatching at the leaves. Paint weedkiller on them with a brush. It's not necessary to paint every leaf. Repeat weekly, always looking out for any you overlooked initially and you WILL win. If your weedkiller is in a spray bottle, decant some into a small pot to use with the brush. If you are afraid of liquid dripping onto other plants, mix in a little wall paper paste to thicken it.

Fen476 · 04/08/2025 16:34

The berries are gorgeous, but it's horrible stuff. I've got it everywhere too, definitely not going to use pesticides in my veg patch though!

Discovered a new horror yesterday - Dodder - had this orange stuff binding up some flowers I was growing from seed. Wondered what on earth it was - apparently it's like bindweed but is parasitic and doesn't have roots, just grows in air. Great!
