Advice for how best to manage sawfly

I'm very new to gardening and would appreciate the expertise from more experienced gardeners. I have sawfly larvae working their way through all my roses at the moment. I am picking them off each day as I find them but is there anything I can do to make my roses less desirable? I'm worried that they will kill the bushes as they seem to nibble through a huge quantity of leaves each day before I find them and spoil the fun!

Try and check all roses every day for the adults laying their eggs into the stems. Pull them off and squash in a tissue. Scrape any eggs out of the slash in the stem. Start this process as early in the season as possible.

Thanks that's really helpful. I can see the slashes on the stems I'll get a cocktail stick and try and dig the eggs out. I'm assuming that letting them crack on will lead to my roses dying?

I have 2 roses, one climbing and one rambling. This year they were utterly decimated by Sawfly. I tried everything except pesticide. I became obsessed and would spend ages just waiting for the barstard things to land. I used a mixture of Neem oil and horticultural detergent on them and harsh sprays with water. Eventually I just cut the roses right back and fed them. The roses are growing like the clappers but sadly the Sawfly have returned and once again I've turned into a crazed Sawfly hunter. As my garden is completely pesticide free I'm loathed to have to resort to using a Sawfly killer but at the moment they seem to be winning. It's heartbreaking as my roses really are gorgeous normally.

I read that in winter the ground underneath needs to be turned over to get the frost to it and to bring up the Sawfly larvae.

@Childrenare4life I'm sorry you're having the same issue but relieved I'm not alone! I shall continue my daily obsession of pick them off! I've been applying neem oil also.

Wood ash from a bonfire on the ground under sawfly effected plants kills the larvae so can help for next year. It's a good winter mulch, and adds nutrition for the plants too. Also more air around the plants too as you don't get them in windy places. Birds will eat them, encouraging small birds into the garden works too.
