Can I ask for suggestions for this planter with trellis?

I’ve been given this planter for my birthday, which I want to use to screen an ugly door in the back of my garage. It will be east-facing, in a fairly sheltered spot and gets a reasonable amount of sun in the spring/summer/early autumn, less in winter but should be pretty frost-free.
ideally, I’d like something to climb up the left hand side which will keep its leaves as long as possible, flowers would be nice. On the other side, I’d like something that trails over the side, and I was thinking of putting some of those little pots with hooks up the right hand side of the trellis.
Does anyone have any suggestions for plants that like the same kind of soil and conditions? The planter is 85 x 40 cm and about 20 cm deep. TIA.

I’m no help but this is lovely! And happy birthday :) I’m on the lookout for similar to use as a screen. Can I ask how high yours is, and any chance you know where it came from please?

It’s by Outsunny and mine came from Robert Dyas. It’s 183cm high overall. It was very easy to assemble, despite the fact that all the screws were missing when it was delivered, but they were sent within a couple of days after I contacted them online.

To be honest it's not very deep - it would be perfect for annuals like sweet peas or Thunbergia alata as long as you keep it well watered.

Most climbers like deep soil to get their roots into.

having said that rachelospermum jasminoides|star jasmine likes shallower containers and would do well if you keep it well watered and fed. Use John Innes no 3 compost when you fill it if you are going to use it for a perennial.

Failing that try a smaller clematis one that does well in a pot - you can search for clematis that do well in containers.

Jasmine - the one that smells Devine !

Clematis armandi? It's evergreen but I'm not sure how well it does in a pot.

I'm growing climbing nasturtium and morning glory (ipomoea Heavenly Blue) in a similar but slightly deeper planter.

Star Jasmine needs a pot depth of 40 - 50cm so might not be suitable.

Thank you all for your suggestions - I’ll be taking this thread on my phone to the garden centre tomorrow!

I’d try a star jasmine. They are evergreen, so would provide screening year round. The flowers smell lovely!

I'm growing climbing nasturtium and morning glory (ipomoea Heavenly Blue) in a similar but slightly deeper planter.

They like at least 45cm (18") for their roots so I don't think they'd be appropriate.

20cm is very shallow for perennials, so I think annuals might be more successful.
