How to save my Hydrangea?

Unfortunately it's not been doing well since being neglected for 2 weeks during our summer holiday! It was in a somewhat shady spot and wasn't adequately watered. I've now moved it to a sunnier spot (but North facing out of direct sunlight) but not sure how to get it back to its former glory!

Water it copiously. If it hasn't had any water for 2 weeks it will be very stressed.

Thank you, should I cut off the wilted flowers or leave them as they are?

I agree with the water i had a sick looking hydrangea i then had a mains water leak she sat in water for a week (there was a storm and everything was a mess so I was low priority) she thrived i had HUGE flowers off her that year

Leave the flowers as protection over the winter. Water lots, with a bit of plant food weekly and it will come back again next year. It won’t be back to its former glory this year, but I don’t think it’s dead.

Thank you everyone!

Hydrangeas are sentient - they either like you or they don’t.
All hydrangeas hate me and I’ve tried with quite a few varieties in different parts of my garden over the years.
Might as well plant twenty pound notes straight into the soil.

I really miss the laugh reaction. I also have a black thumb (clearly!)

Mine are generally unhappy in pots, much happier in the ground.

I think I’m down to two in pots. They need so much care, especially water.

My mil comes to water them when we go on holiday.

Yours looks salvageable Smile

Same here. All of mine are in the ground now.

The leaves suffered from a lack of water - you can see that because it is the ends of the leaves and the edges which have gone brown. Now you are watering it again, any new emerging leaves should be fine.

Hydrangeas only produce one lot of flowers though, so it is unlikely you'll get any more of them this year.

Water, water, water- I’ve had some much sicker-looking hydrangeas than that and water has revived them. With one I had to put the pot in a trough of water to resuscitate it - but it’s back, strong and flowering now.

Littletreefrog · 27/07/2025 22:40

Can I jump on and ask a hydrangea question? I planted 3 young hydrangeas I got from Home Bargains and they have been brilliant loads of flowers but I have no idea what I do with them into Autumn and Winter. Deadhead them? Cut them back? Do nothing?

3KidsPlusDdog · 28/07/2025 10:05

@Littletreefrog I don’t really do anything with mine, other than in April or so (after the threat of frost) I cut off last year’s flower heads

LynetteScavo · 28/07/2025 14:42

I do the same as @3KidsPlusDdog
i don’t have a pre Ken growing them in pots - you just have to make sue the pot is big enough. I bought this one about 5 years ago in Aldi, and it’s always done OK in a pot.

I also follow the deadhead in Spring policy. This is one of my limelight hedges, it's only just starting to flower but is doing Ok despite the hosepipe ban.

Mine go crunchy brown despite regular watering and shady side of garden. Biggish pots too.

No idea why

EllatrixB · 28/07/2025 19:55

All my hydrangeas are in pots and I do bugger other than water then and occasionally deadhead them at irregular times of the year. I think I'm just lucky! I tend to keep them in partly-shaded areas - those ones do better than those in full sun for me.

bluesky · 29/07/2025 16:13

You deadhead them after the threat of frost has gone
