My app says one thing which looks nothing like the reality.

What is this flower please?

It’s an Antirrhinum, also known as a Snapdragon. Bees love to climb inside to collect the nectar.

Thank you. Initially my app said it was a Maltese Cross in real life. When I asked again via the photo in my phone it said it was a Hartweg's beardtongue, which looked more believable.

edited for terrible typing.

It looks like a penstemon to me.

Fairyvocals · 27/07/2025 18:39

I was thinking penstemon, too.

Woodwanderer · 27/07/2025 18:40

Penstemon

dairydebris · 27/07/2025 18:41

Penstemon Arabesque

Nocookiesforme · 27/07/2025 18:42

Definitely Penstemon and not Snapdragon - the flowers on Snapdragon are more bunched on the stalk.
Cut it down in autumn to about 6" and it will come up again next year as it's hardy.

Sadly it's not mine, it's in a local graveyard and looks stunning. I'd like to try and grow some though.

Penstamen and they're very easy to grow. Mine has taken over my border!

2025ismybestyear · 27/07/2025 18:46

Can anyone recommend somewhere I could buy some seeds or plants from please?

I’ve bought penstemons this season from Morrisons, Sarah Raven, Thompson and Morgan and Gardening Express.

T&M and GE have them in stock now and they’ll flower until the first frosts. Your local garden centre will also have them I suspect. Depends what type you like but the GE ones are on offer and very similar to your image.

Wouldn’t recommend seeds. You won’t get flowers until next year, would have to overwinter, is a bit late to start them off and they’re tiny/temperamental to germinate.

Once the plants are established you can either split clumps or take cuttings.

I have this exact penstemon and many others, one of my favourites. I collect seeds from the spent flowerheads, dry and keep over Winter in an envelope. x

Another vote for penstemon. You can identify plants by taking a photo and running it through Google lens.

If a Flower head has fallen in the ground can I take it and use?

I used a different app and it gave me different, neither were right.

It's definitely a penstemon. The common American name for them is beardtongue but I've never heard anyone in the UK call it that. That's one of the problems with the apps, the common names vary so much from place to place.
I have tried to grow it in my garden but it hates my clay soil. You'll only find it easy to grow if you have well drained light soil and sun.

2025ismybestyear · 27/07/2025 22:31

I've got clay soil but also regular so I'll try. Thanks everyone.

No, the flower is just the petals which are jettisoned by the plant once it has been fertilised. The seeds continue to develop and ripen in a seed head on the plant itself.

narniabusiness · 27/07/2025 22:57

You should be able to grow one from a cutting though. There are plenty of instructions online and it works surprisingly well.

2025ismybestyear · 28/07/2025 12:28

Thanks everyone. I can't take a cutting as it's in the graveyard but I've got a few garden centres near me so I'll keep a look out.

Not Antirrhinum, looks like Penstemon.
