I have no greenery in my house as I’m crap with plants.

Can anyone recommend low maintenance nice plants for indoors. I don’t want plastic ones.

Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum wallisii)- I have had mine almost 15 years. I've left it alone while I've gone away for two weeks and just watered it before I go and when I get back. They are incredibly hardy and very pretty with the white flowers. It's the only one I haven't killed!

Rattytouille · 26/07/2025 15:13

Oh yes, I like them. I seem to remember having them when I lived overseas and wondering why I’d not killed them 😝

Succulents like jade plant, haworthia, kalanchoe and aloe vera. They don't need watering very often and can cope with benign neglect - and being on sunny windowsills.

Spider plants are pretty much indestructible.

Meadowfinch · 26/07/2025 15:15

I have a spider plant and a dragon tree in my bathroom which faces east and gets morning sunshine.

Both are reassuringly forgiving. They can survive unscathed if I go away for two weeks. Otherwise, half a pint of water a week keeps each of them happy.

Sansevieria! Absolutely bombproof. I know this because I've really tried very hard to kill it.

DS was given one as a flat warming present. Then he went travelling and gave it to me to look after until he returned. I have forgotten about it for weeks on end, accidentally knocked it over, ignored it, over watered it... You name it, I've probably done it to the poor plant.

Three years on and not only is it thriving, it's made plenty of new plants I ended up potting on. I've got 5 of them now and gave away another 9. A house plant for the Black-thumbed Death-To-Plants among us

Pothos.
Known as “forgetful people’s plant” where I live!
Peace lily is poisonous to pets so I had to give away my huge coffee table one (pride and joy) when Dpup arrived.

TomatoWildFlowers · 26/07/2025 18:02

Monstera, mother in laws tongue, spider plant, pothos, jade - all of them so indestructible they might as well be plastic!

SoftLass · 26/07/2025 18:05

Another vote for sansevieria (mother in law's tongue) here. Indestructible! Also Christmas/easter cactuses, I have loads of them.

ACynicalDad · 26/07/2025 18:07

Even if you don’t buy from them lol at patch plants, they say which are unkillable etc.

Chinsupmeloves · 26/07/2025 18:09

Spider plants and busy lizzies are very hardy and apparently brilliant at oxygenating the air.

Bluebellwood129 · 26/07/2025 18:09

Adding in a retro vibe - yucca and rubber plant. Don't forget to consider light requirements though.

WonderingWanda · 26/07/2025 18:11

These are the plants I have managed not to kill for over a year. Dracaena, Peace Lilly, Anthurium, Kalanchoe.

Rattytouille · 27/07/2025 08:13

I’ve 3 north facing bathrooms, and a downstairs toilet with no windows.

I’ve a very open living/ dining area with floor to ceiling glass doors letting light steam in, and an east facing window with lots of light.

I’ve a large square south facing hallway with loads of light as it has full length windows.

These are the areas I’m looking at.

I can’t remember the plants that have come to a tragic end but anything indoors I think I’ve over watered. Anyone ever killed a cactus?

I love orchids.

I’ve also no planted in pots flowers outside as I’ve mismanaged them too.

I stayed in an air b n b recently and they had lots of green plants, dried twigs/ flowers in pots and flowering plants in pots. It just looked lovely.

My house is very modern, scandi like. 😜 I think it needs more je ne sais quoi 😂 🤴

Succulents.

shellyleppard · 27/07/2025 08:20

Spider plants...i brought one for 50 pence and its now taken over the windowsill. Also it puts out little runners so will always give you new plants ☘️

Needspaceforlego · 27/07/2025 08:21

Money plant, the tag even said it "thrives on neglect', I've kept it alive for years.

MimiGC · 27/07/2025 10:37

I recently killed a spider plant, so they are not indestructible! The leaves went brown and shrivelled. Don’t know what I did wrong.

Spider plants are pretty much indestructible.

Not in my house, I've murdered 2 😂

timestheyareachanging25 · 27/07/2025 10:54

Is there in particular for windowless rooms anyone would recommend? I have an integral garage type room (with fake garage door on front) that needs brightening up with plants but has now window

I did manage to kill my spider plant but I think where I put it was too sunny and hot - enclosed porch and I should have - when it went out the long “bits” potted them?

my money plant in the bathroom is however going strong!

TomatoWildFlowers · 28/07/2025 08:11

For the windowless rooms - get a daylight bulb for the light fitting and leave it on 6 to 8 hours a day and go nuts!
