For the action of accidentally deadheading a bud when you think you're holding the stalk of a dead flower head?

Or possibly the feeling when you realise you've just done it.

Or both.

Perhaps there is in German…

Budagony?

Dutchhouse14 · 21/07/2025 08:48

Also need a word for mistaking a young plant for a weed and pulling it up

Igneococcus · 21/07/2025 08:51

Weltschmerz, it feels a bit dramatic in this context but maybe not to gardeners

Can always rely on German! Fehlpflücken means to mis-pick.

You're right though OP, maybe one needs coining in English. Hortifail? Budblunder? Floracide?

shellyleppard · 21/07/2025 08:54

@Headfullofbees floricde seems dark and dramatic enough.....i once pulled up little carrot thinking they were weeds 😔

Cedrabbage · 21/07/2025 08:54

Buddcident?

IMissSparkling · 21/07/2025 08:55

Obviously it should be called dreadheading. Done it many times. 😬

zaxxon · 21/07/2025 08:58

A feeling I know so well.

Gaaarrrrrggghdening?

squashyhat · 21/07/2025 09:00

Or cutting through the electric lead with the hedge trimmers. DH did that twice recently. Now replaced with a bright orange one 🙄

BuildingHope · 21/07/2025 09:07

OMG I love all of these, I actually went to ChatGPT for some suggestions too -

  • Blossocide
  • Snipwreck

And for the feeling:

  • Prunegret
  • Trimorse
  • Petalancholy

Oh noooo!!

My poor DH cut the passion flower we planted when our first child was born thinking it was bind weed. Was the first year we got flowers on it. Think it was 3 years ago and I'm still sad. Could say I'm 'florlorn' about it :P

Soporalt · 21/07/2025 09:25

My DH “weeded” my broad bean seedlings a few years ago. He doesn’t like broad beans.

shellyleppard · 21/07/2025 09:26

@Headfullofbees did it recover though?? 🤞❤️

Not at all, he chopped it right at the base and pulled the roots out, as you do with bind weed. Only when looking at the root and seeing it absolutely wasn't bw did he have the 'oh shit' moment!

shellyleppard · 21/07/2025 09:30

@Headfullofbees oh no!!! 😭😭

PestoHoliday · 21/07/2025 09:32

Dh binned all the dahlias that were overwintering in the greenhouse, mistook the sucker for the rose and cut the actual rose down and dug up and binned the hellebores thinking they were part of the plant he was removing.

He is now not allowed to prune or dig out ANYTHING without direct supervision.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 21/07/2025 09:39

Perhaps you could say you have Anne Boleyn’d your flowers. (I think she was totally stitched up hence the wrong head was removed.)

My DH isn't allowed free rein in the garden either - not since he butchered a camellia thinking it was ivy. Confused
