Olive tree question

I wonder if anyone can help.

a gardener I knew said it was possible to dig up a small olive tree I’d planted in the garden that was on its last legs but has since flourished, and twist all the shoots from the base into one main trunk.

she said this is how they get those thick gnarly trunks more quickly than 100s of years of growth.

any ideas what it is called or how to do it ?

google says it’s called Inosculation when it occurs naturally. And braiding is a similar idea. But I’ll like to twist the shoots around the trunk. Is this something that can be done?

I don't see why not, but you need to use something that isn't going to cut in and damage the bark. Maybe use some cut-up old tights or socks and wrap it round firmly with those, then put cable ties over the top. The fabric will have a bit of give in it, so won't strangle the thing. You'll probably have to re-do it a number of times though, and it is a long-term project.

Ok thanks - it would be an interesting project!
