Mt grass has started going brown I've tried to take photos. The part by the fence I even tried to out soil and see down but it isn't working. I think there are different problems in each bit the bit by the fence is so brown and dry the part by my steps is different

No photos yet but isn’t everybody’s grass brown currently? Mine is essentially hay.

The pucs aren't showing yet, but it's the weather. If we ever get a decent amount of rain again, it should green up again quite quickly, and that will be the time to deal with any patches.

It's just the dry weather OP. I bet the pattern you see is because there's rubble under the grass, the soil is shallow because of that and it's dried out quicker.

Grass everywhere is brown at the moment. Look at the grass in your local park or in the countryside and you'll see the same. It'll come back ok as soon as it starts raining. For future reference one way to keep grass greener when it's dry is not to cut it so short.

The bit along the fence has only been down a few months that whole lawn had 6 tonne of soil laid down and new grass. It was getting watered every night then when it got it was cut it had brown patches. It has got worse since even woth me watering it regularly also tried not watering as much incase I was doing it too much

It's hard to see from the photo, but does it look like birds have been pecking at the lawn? I think perhaps I can see black lumps of soil where birds have been scratching in the grass, especially near the fence. If so it could be leatherjackets. Can you dig up a patch? If it's leatherjackets you'll see big fat grubs there that eat the grass roots.

The lumps of soul are part of the new soil I laid the birds only come when there is new seed down.

What is underneath the soil that was laid down before the new grass?

My suspicions would be that there's something below all the new stuff that's different in that area from the rest of the lawn, and that could be what's causing it.

Jesswebster01 · 13/07/2025 22:11

This is when it was newly laid. Before we put new turf down it was an old field with nettles we got a digger dug it and flattened then put down new turf and soil

I'm thinking you might have a lawn fungus issue which can be caused by overwatering, so it is worth treating it for that to see if it helps. Stop watering that area so much, and try spraying it with a regular fungicide for garden use. Leave it for a few days, then use a general purpose fertiliser over the whole area. A liquid mixed in a watering can would be okay, Miracle gro or tomato feed, whatever you have. Then just water it once a week if it doesn't rain.

Try to stay off the sad areas if you can.

Come mid September, you can then put some more grass seed down. Use great handfuls of it, so the birds can have some, and there will be plenty left behind to germinate.
