Tall planting ideas for shade, summer flowering preferably not bulbs

I planted a border at the back of my garden which is more or less full shade. Some sun gets through but is overlooked by a few trees. There’s a mix of small shrubs and a few perennials. When I was searching for plants I focused on the shade part, and not the bloom time part so it looks lovely until June but now I’m left with a lot of green and empty patches where I’ve cut things back.

I’d like to plant something to bloom July onwards, with height so I can see it from the house/patio. The area gets very weedy so avoiding bulbs as I will 100% disturb them when weeding. Ideally something narrow/ stemmy, like verbena bonariensis so I can avoid moving the existing shrubs.

Alternatively, I could put some hanging baskets on tall stakes, but struggling to find ideas for shade.

Any ideas welcome!

Most shade plants flower fairly early. The later stars in my shade are Japanese anemone but they tend not to do so well in deep shade in my garden.

Veronicastrum virginiacum would work. Mine like shade and give tall white spires at the back of the border. Lovely for when the fox gloves finish.

Arum lilies love shade, so do white phlox, hellebores, white perennial geraniums- most white flowered plants seem to prefer some shade.
i have a border that doesn’t get any sun. I have a Handl climbing rose, Camilla clematis, flowering box shrub, acanthus, hellebores and arum Lilies all doing very well.,

Tellima grandiflora, thalictrum aquilegifolium, maybe astilbe (although not as airy as verbena bonariensis).

Thanks i’ll look at these!

My tellima is just going over so might be a bit early for what you're looking for, but the astilbe and thalictrum are just starting to flower. Astrantias might be another good bet.

Astrantia
Actaea Simplex
Kirengeshoma palmata isn’t spindly but is great in late summer
Sambucus - quite big shrub, purple one has worked well in pretty much full shade and is growing tall but not wide for me
Hosta - loads and loads of varieties but Krossa Regal and its offspring grow very upright. It has very tall flowers (although may flower a little earlier than you are looking for). Purple Heart is quite low growing and plain green leaves but has purple flowers through to September
An Acer - might not flower but colours can be spectacular. Put it in a pot and move it into a gap in the summer?

Aconitum (monkshood) would probably do well if the soil is damp.

@PureBlackVoid Cannas do well in part shade, despite the misconception that they need full sun. Plus you get the bonus of fantastic foliage when not in flower.

Nicotiana alata also does well in both shade and sun. You can remove the lower leaves so it looks more airy. They are very easy to grow from seed and they germinate quickly. Lovely scent in the evening too.

I would be tempted to put some verbena bonariensis in, and see how it goes - plants can be very adaptable… my VB only gets sun from mid afternoon but is flowering like crazy.

If you decide to do hanging baskets, begonias and impatiens are good for shade.

@Zippedydodah have you found arum lily invasive? I like them but am worried about their reputation for spreading. TIA

My shady border has a few tall plants which flower later -Filipendula rubra (queen of the prairie), purple loosestrife and Japanese anemones. They’re all pretty tall, and also inclined to spread. There’s a lot of astilbe too, that’s not flowered yet either.

Astilbe do well for me in shade. Fuschias can too. I find verbena b. Does for one year but won’t self seed. It’s much better in sun though. This year I planted out white cosmos in the shady border, I’m hoping it’ll add some late season colour.
