Is there such a thing as something fragrant in pots that would be happy and thrive in a patio area that gets full sun until around 3 then is in shade
We have cats that use the garden as a toilet ( I just clean it , I know that's just cats catting) and I feel like I need nice smells outside to try to counteract!
All help most welcome please if you don't mind helping a novice. Loved experience form those happy to help is better than a google session in my experience and what this place excels at. Thank you 🙏

Roses, lavender, rosemary or honeysuckle/ jasmine if you stick an obelisk in the (big) pot with them or put them next to a wall with a trellis

Seamoss · 16/06/2025 16:25

Oh wallflowers too

SqueamishHamish · 16/06/2025 16:30

Sweet peas growing up an obelisk in a pot although you may be a little late for that. Stock smells amazing - I have some in my garden this year and can smell it as soon as I open the door in the morning.

DoreenDo · 16/06/2025 16:36

Oh stocks yes!! And I forgot you can buy the obelisk things. Am I too late for smell this summer or if I get a big lavender will u be able to just sit with my head in it?!

I also like rosemary. Reminds me of holidays.
I'll see how you buy stock !

Not too late at all! (apart from the sweat peas)

UpMyself · 16/06/2025 17:01

Jasmine

Sunwarddangledhardens · 16/06/2025 17:06

I just planted up a lovely jasmine in a big pot and plan to train it up the fence. Smells wonderful.

Catmint 🐈

UpMyself · 16/06/2025 17:24

Not lilies. They are poisonous to cats.

Camomile is lovely in pots, especially by the door where you brush past it and get a lovely waft of fragrance each time. It has pretty daisy-like flowers and delicate leaves, and it's quite hard to kill as a bonus 🙂

I’ve got a few salvias dotted around, the ‘lips’ type like Hot Lips or amethyst lips and I notice that when the dogs brush against them there’s a wonderful scent.

A garden centre might have sweet peas. Saw some yesterday but they were quite expensive.

Lavender. If it's to be permanent be sure to buy English lavender as it's the only one guaranteed to be hardy.

African basil.

We have a little potted herb garden, grows really well and easily - mint, lavender, thyme (lemon thyme is lush), rosemary, sage and some tarragon. They all last year round and smell lovely plus they're very useful for cooking!

NoAlarmsRequired · 18/06/2025 13:07

Sweet peas.

Gribbit987 · 18/06/2025 15:22

I have nicotiana and petunias by my door. They will last until the first frost. Heavy honey smell and loved by bees.

Jasmine and honeysuckle are nice but only flower for a few months. Lavender won’t flourish without full sun.

If you want a perennial (something you can leave in the pot forever) I’d go with a viburnum. You get all year interest as they’re evergreen and have berries, they’re ok in shade and the flowers smell of gardenia.

For smaller plants to underplant whatever you decide to grow currently the two strongest scented plants in my garden are viola rebecca (which has been in flower since I bought it at Easter) and dianthus coconut sundae (recently come into flower but should repeat all summer). Both have edible petals for sprinkling on your food.
