I have a wildflower with a reddish spike growing in front of a geranium and palm in my garden. Can someone tell me what it is, please?

I think it might be hedge woundwort, or else something related to it.

Have you tried a plant ID app? I use Picture This which seems to work (tested it on all my plants I do know the name for) and it tells you how healthy it thinks the plant is.

I think it’s Dead Nettle
edited to say i agree it looks more like woundwort

Toolatetoasknow · 12/06/2025 17:04

I think Woundwort too, does it have a pungent, musty, herby smell if you rub the leaves?

It's Hedge Woundwort

Thanks all. I haven't noticed a smell! But looks like it's hedge woundwort.

I have been doing a bit of botany recently. It’s super fun. This week I was learning about dead nettle family. Lamaciaceae

Basically if it has a square stem and opposite leaves; then it’s most likely a dead nettle of some variety.

And this one is a hedge woundwort; you can tell from the decussant leaves (each opposite pair at 90 degrees), the leaf shape, and the flower head is quite distinctive.

I have been thinking of starting a botany thread if anyone’s interested?

@Vinted8457764 MN have just started a nature/conservation type board. A botany thread would be welcome there I'm sure.

If you pick a leaf and crush it, it really stinks!
The name comes from its use in herbalism as a wound dressing and to stop bleeding.
