Soil depths for veggie planter – advice needed

I'm having a 3-tiered wooden planter made so my kids can start growing veggies and herbs in the garden. It will be something similar to the first image. Plan was to grow herbs in the top section and veggies in the middle and lower section.

I have 2 options in the way it can be constructed that result in different internal soil container measurements.

Should I go for option 1 which is cheaper but results in less soil depth in the top herb section (22cm / 8") and middle veggie section (27cm / 10")?

Or option 2 where all 3 sections are combined and results in much deeper soil depths in the top and middle section?

Any pros and cons for either?

Depends what you're planning to grow. Carrots to enter in the village show will need the depth. Lettuces won't.

Most things suitable for that size of planter will be fine with the smaller option.

Definitely not aiming for prize winning veggies, it's just something to get the kids interested in planting and growing things.

So the bottom two sections each with approx 30cm / 12" depth should be okay for things like cherry tomatoes, radishes, lettuce, carrots, beans etc?

Yes, that will be plenty.
