What could I plant in a gravel border?

Just moved into a new house. There's a long border at the front which is a couple of cm of gravel, a tiny bit of soil and then weed sheeting under.

Is there anything I could plant there?
I like country garden style, ie plants everywhere and really don't like the sterile gravel border. But ripping out the weed sheeting isn't something I really want to do any time soon.

I was thinking maybe green roof plants, eg some sedums. Or some alpine plants?
Any suggestions welcome.
West of Scotland so usually plenty of rain!

Violets
Thyme
Aubrieta
Icelandic poppies

There's loads of different succulents like sedums and houseleeks, so worth a try although they might not be keen on winter wet.

Thanks, Icelandic poppies look great, and I like the idea of thyme as well.

Erigeron karvinskianus would probably do well, and it fills out dull spaces very quickly
Lavender (although they like it a bit drier usually but worth a try)

I have dog violets, heuchera, aquilegia, poppies, self heal, hedge woundwart, forget-me-nots, ferns and foxgloves in my gravel. Each and every one put itself there. They'll do well for you @rhubarb84 but be careful what you wish for 😁

I have weed suppressant under my gravel but because the gravel wasn't washed before it was put on it wasn't long before the seedlings started to take hold. With time the growing medium under the gravel will increase along with plants wanting to make use of it. It shouldn't be too long until you realise you have the garden you want 🙂

I have saxifrage, sedums and eregeron karviskianus doing well in my gravel.

Ha! In my last garden I lost track of what I'd planted / sown and what self-seeded. I had foxgloves turning up everywhere!

What about red valerian and sea thrift? You might have to do a bit of foraging for seeds though. They look pretty and can live happily in gravel, but I can’t think of anywhere you can actually buy the plants - if you find plants growing wild, you can usually get a good lot of them growing where you want within a couple of seasons by shaking the seedy plants over the gravel (this is what I did in my first house).
