next door inherited this beautiful, massive rose tree/shrub from the previous owners. They have no idea what it is and don’t cut it back much. I asked if I could take cuttings last year and they kindly said yes, so I now have three little beauties of my own. I’d like to know what type it is mainly to understand how easy to train, grow and prune it is and how much sun to give them (as I’m tempted to take more cuttings and put them in shadier spots). My mum also fancies one of my cuttings but has a small garden so she’s worried it’ll take over. It smells amazing and does at least another flush of flowers each summer. Thanks wise ones!

OK so roses are not easy to identify unless expert (I'm not!) Because there are literally hundreds.
BUT I looked on the David Austin website (experts) and it could be this. Not certain, but possible. They might themselves be able to advise you and identify it OP?

Well ChatGPT has suggested David Austin Gertrude Jekyll. I have no idea how accurate that might be but have posted a photo for comparison purposes. It has some alternative suggestions as included. Apparently they cross breed a lot so it may be tricky.

Thank you @Divebar2021I don’t think it’s a Gertrude as I bought one a couple of years ago and while the colour is very similar, the flowers on gertie aren’t as cupped and seem slightly larger. I’m a sucker for a hot pink or orange rose!

It’s certainly a looker - especially if it’s scented too. Gorgeous.

For anyone who loves roses, the David Austin gardens are looking amazing at the moment. DH and I visited last week, and came away with three new roses. Well worth a visit if you're passing!

heldinadream · 02/06/2025 18:52

Yes it's not Gertrude the flower shape's wrong.

Try Rosa Pomponella

https://rosariumlottum.com/en/product/pomponella-cluster-rose/

Says it’s not a climber but if it’s been left alone for a few years in the right conditions it could well have romped away and turned into a de facto climber!

Cracking rose whatever it is 😀

Ooh, @Stickthatupyourdojo I've got one just the same! It came from my late granny's house so I've tried to make cuttings from it but only managed one for my sister...and I've no idea what it's called!

It does look very much like the Royal Jubilee though, down to turning almost purpley when it's going over. Mine is in a sunny border but my sister's is in a shady courtyard so I think it's pretty easy going, and I only give it a vague chop each Jan. It's been there for years without taking over but tbf I don't give it much to go on...your neighbour's looks bigger.

Its lush, so many flowers 🥰
