Help climbing creeper root cut

I’m devastated. Out beautiful climbing creeper which is 20 years old, which clubs up my house, has been cut at the root by workmen. 1 large section was cut but it looks like another significant root is still in place at the base. Leaves are already startling to wilt on one side, the incident happened 3 days ago. Will the entire creeper die?

What type is it? We had a passion flower that got broken at the base but grew back the next year. The clematis wasnt so lucky. Next door got over zealous with their strimming 😡

Thanks for replying, I’ve been advised it’s a Virginia creeper although chat gpt suggests a Boston ivy.

Boston Ivy and Virginia creeper are both pretty tough and fast growers so I wouldn’t give up hope. I am constantly hacking one back despite its beauty because it is a rampant thug that gets everywhere.

Thank you. I have a very kind neighbour who is coming to have a proper look at it tomorrow and has great gardening knowledge (and already formulating a plan). It goes the most beautiful red colour in autumn and is quite the talking point and I adore it. I’m so sad that it’s been damaged.

Virginia creeper will be fine. You may get some die off but the rest will take over.

If a single neat cut may be able to stick together again.

Why did the workers do that?

I'm trying not to be too annoyed at them as I'm sure it was an accident. They were subcontracted to fit an external point to the house and the ivy/creeper takes up the whole front and side of the house . They were just unfortunate where they wanted to put the point in and got the roots of the plant.

@GivememyowlbackSandra I would put in a formal complaint anyway. If they had to cut it away in order to fit the thing they should have informed you first. If it was accidental, they need their wrists slapping. Either way, complain.

Yes, I think I will and will include pictures of before and after as part of the plant is now visibly dying/damaged.

Ahh , hopefully it will recover , I have two Virginia Creeper (or Boston Ivy )

They are (don;t tell the other plants ) my favourites as no matter how much I cut them back , they grow back like proper little troopers , lovely leaves , gorgeous red ..... then Job Done , they shed them.

One in the border , one in a pot .
