Anyone ID this plant for me?

I've tried an app but it's not giving me correct answers....

I planted it about 3 years ago and it was very small. It's now as tall as me at 5ft 6.
In early spring it had lots of little pale yellow flowers on.

It now has what look like seed pods on it. I want to cut it back but wanted to look up when was the best time do it

Is it broom (Cytisus scoparius)?

24Dogcuddler · 01/06/2025 12:53

If you put a photo into Google image search you should get some answers. The red may cause confusion it said goji berry! Also sage but did show a plant with yellow flowers identified as aretemisia absinthium ( wormwood)
I’m sure an experienced gardener will know..

leakycauldron · 01/06/2025 12:56

Sorry the red is another plant. So ignore that. Will google these suggestions!

As PP said, Cytisus or Broom, has yellow flowers, grows woody and develops seedpods.

DrDameKatyDeniseInExile · 01/06/2025 12:58

Well some are yellow - I've got yellow, red and white versions too

BobbyBiscuits · 01/06/2025 13:02

Are they wallflowers? Yellow, red flowers that happen early in the season? Mine now have big long green seed pods at the ends. If it's that you should take the pods off.
They're kind of annoying in a way as they look ugly when not in flower.

leakycauldron · 01/06/2025 13:10

It looks very similar to Cytisus x praecox 'Allgold

But mine is more tree then bush! So hard to be sure.

Maybe I'll leave it till autumn when everything dies back and give a trim then.

I planted it with some small hot lips plants and at the time was not very green fingered so just planted and hoped for the best.

Both plants have thrived but have kind of taken over!

@BobbyBiscuits No, it is a large shrub, not a wallflower.

OP - you can trim it back but the broom family doesn't take all that kindly to it, so maybe remove some long lanky bits and leave the rest. Don't cut it back into old wood.

Thank you. Sorry it's hard to see in the pic. And some of my wallflowers do look like a large shrub at this point, they've got very thick woody stems.

@BobbyBiscuits I know what you mean about wallflowers. It's not always easy to tell from photos posted on here anyway, is it?

Thank you, yeah true about the pics. But also I'm a very enthusiastic gardner who somehow doesn't know hardly any of the names of my plants! 🤣😐 X

@BeNiceWhenItsFinished I don't even know how to spell 'gardener'...🤣 X

It's great fun though isn't it?
