Nice pot about 21" high , 14" diameter
Paved area has walls on 3 sides and the 4th wall is the garage wall with a path down the side leading to paved patio.

Ones I've discounted :
Jasmine -already have
Sweet Peas- got two big pots growing
Chocolate Vine- have
Virginia Creeper - got two ( one potted /one garden)
Roses- got one
Hop- got one , grows really well but not a pretty plant
Ivy- have

Honeysuckle- don;t like the smell
Passionflower- do not grow well for me
Clematis - got one at the front, but I don;t remember planting it

Is there anything else I could try ? I quite like the look of Campsis but I read its a garden thug , though should be ok potted ?

TIA

Passion flower

Dodgethis · 20/05/2025 20:57

Why have you discounted all
clematis? They are so varied - you can get one that flowers in any season and evergreen or deciduous.

Hoenysuckle and Jasmine also come is such a wide variety of flowering seasons and deciduous/evergreen varieties.

Agree re there are such a range of clematis. Winter beauty is aptly named. If shady I'd say climbing hydrangea. Or maybe an edible climber: thornless blackberry, tayberry, kiwi?

Edited: apologies, meant to quote @Dodgethis not the OP

They just don't grow for me , I did have one (in a pot ) which grew ok , then got storm damage and no more .
The one at the front gets cut back and re grows .
Any new ones I've tried grow weedy and wither . (And it is full on sun where I;m thinking of, not sure they like it )

Passion flower

I've had three , one grew pretty well , climbed along a wire but died in the really hot weather a couple of years ago . The others just sat like little mardy sticks till I realised they;d perished .

Wisteria ?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/05/2025 21:15

I love Wisteria , I was on holiday , we went to a beautiful garden and I was knocked sideways by the smell of it . Heaven !

But I think it;s too much plant for me , and I have the Jasmine for scent .

I did think about a grape vine (I'm in the SE) but if I did get fruit , I;d ger wasps !

The hop got fruit ( hops ) last year .

You can't have too many roses.

I'm starting a new garden and need at least six climbers, and I'm never successful with clematis. I'm planning a couple of jasmines, couple of roses, and climbing hydrangea,. But I'm also looking at philadelphus and lilac, not climbing, but up against the fence.

I used to have a Paul's Scarlet climbing rose years ago , it grew well and covered in blooms . Something like that might work...?

Might potter along to the local market , they have some garden stalls .
(I got some nice MoneyMaker tomato plants £3 each a couple of weeks back )

Climbing hydrangea, climbing bluebells, Chilean potato plant, campsis flavour trumpet vine.

longtompot · 20/05/2025 23:41

I was going to suggest Climbing hydrangeas but it prefers cooler spots and would struggle in full sun

minipie · 20/05/2025 23:51

Plumbago - but it doesn’t like a hard frost

Sollya heterophylla - ditto

Bougainvillea - won’t like getting too wet

Thank you to @longtompot for the Hardenbergia suggestion, could be perfect for me!

GoodQueenBess · 20/05/2025 23:54

You can't have too many roses. This.

DeSoleil · 21/05/2025 00:17

Album white potato vine. Solanum Laxum.

DeSoleil · 21/05/2025 00:19

Bluebell creeper. Sollya heterophylla ultra blue.

Winter jasmine? It's hardy, flowers in late winter, pretty yellow flowers, likes a sunny spot. No scent though and is pretty boring to look at during the summer. My solution to that would be to put a summer flowering clematis with it, but I like to mix clematis with other climbers so I get flowers for longer. Not sure a clematis would like a pot on a sunny patio though (they like their roots cool) so maybe you should underplant the winter jasmine with something low growing.

Otherwise go for another rose, something that reliably repeat flowers and is heavily scented.

How about runner beans?

Beebumble2 · 22/05/2025 08:26

I know you have said that you already have Jasmine, but how about Jasmine Beesianum, which has red flowers rather than white. I’ve just planted one to ramble through a hedge.

olderbutwiser · 22/05/2025 08:29

it’s not that big a pot for something perennial in full sun. There are some lovely enthusiastic annual climbers - thunbergia, rhodochriton, Spanish flag. Have a look on the Sarah Raven website.

I have a pink flowered jasmine that runs through a pyracantha . It started in a pot and got too big so now in the border , it;s in flower at the moment ...but no clue what variety Grin. Tiny pink flowers
