Not sure what type it is. Can anyone help? I’ve given lots of extra water in case it’s the lack of that’s causing it.

Can't be sure but it looks like a katsura.

I have a much smaller one which looks in a similar condition to yours.

I repotted it last year after bringing it home. It survived the winter and was the first of all my acers to leaf out, which might be why its struggling a bit now, our temps were up and down late March/April.

Also I'd moved it to a slightly sunnier spot then went in a holiday, not ideal. Anyway I've now moved him back to a very shady spot and fed him. Will leave him there and see how he gets on.

Thanks. This is in the ground and I’ve had it at least 5 years. Usually a lovely lime green at this stage before turning beautiful shades of yellow and orange in autumn. It was out early you’re right. It’s in a partly sunny spot but has a hedge and other established shrubs for competition. Will continue generous watering and hope for the best.

If you wouldn’t mind what type of feed did you give it?

My two in the ground are doing well, they are orange dreams though and leafed out later.

The feed I use is the liquid seaweed, half a cap diluted in a 5l watering can. If I run out I use tomato feed.

You could try putting a mulch of ericaceous compost around it, maybe the soil needs a boost 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks for that., I will. I have a paperbark Acer in a pot that leafed out later and it’s doing great but I have watered the pots in this drought .

Brilliant news, it looks fab, so pleased for you 😁

@greengreyblue It’s not an acer. Attached is an acer leaf and a Katsura leaf as that was mentioned. I’m not sure what it is but it clearly needed water.

It is an Acer. Here is a photo of the leaf. Had it a good few years now and can’t remember which type. Anyway, it’s doing very well now.

Palmatum rings a bell.

'Katsura' is a variety of Acer palmatum.

StanfreyPock · 06/08/2025 17:47

Acers can have major wobbles from time to time, and definitely don't like it too dry or too sunny! Ours half died a few years ago but then recovered and has shot up since, but we had to remove one whole branch that had died back.

Glad yours has recovered. We noted in a garden in Scotland (Drummond Castle, near Crieff) with some stunning mature acers, that some of them showed signs of similar episodes, and they even had some backup trees growing in tubs in the kitchen garden area in case substitutes were needed.

Ok. But an Acer

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 06/08/2025 19:27

Er no. A Katsura is a completely different tree with totally different leaves. I know, I have both of them. The Katsura is much bigger! Does have glorious autumn colour but it’s not the same tree. It could be an acer palmatum kinshi though.

greengreyblue · 06/08/2025 19:48

Ok. No need for the passive aggressive reply. I bought it with a label that said Acer .

TizerorFizz · 06/08/2025 19:55

I said it could be an acer palmatum kinshi!! Yes, an acer! But it’s not a Katsura tree.

Yes. There are hundreds of named varieties of Japanese maple and Katsura is one of them.

This is why gardeners tend to use Latin names instead of common names - to avoid exactly this sort of confusion, ie:

Cercidiphyllum japonicum = common name - the Katsura tree

Acer palmatum 'Katsura' = common name - Japanese maple, variety 'Katsura'

The word 'Katsura' in Japanese means wig. 😂
