Has anyone planted out their dahlias?

I started mine off in pots, some are about a foot tall and itching to get them out.
With all this good weather has anyone taken the plunge?

Ah my fellow Dahlia lovers!

I kept mine all out in our newly established beds over winter ,wasn't sure many would survive but actually looks like they are all coming back. V South though.

One is being snacked on daily by the slugs so I've left it as a sacrificial lamb at this point.

Bought a few extra tubers this year and plonked them in some pots just to make the patio area look a bit friendlier.

Really want to get a Thomas Edison, but have been banned from getting any big ones this year.

What are your favourites of the lot?

Yep, live in York, planted on Saturday

I left a lot in the ground and have about a dozen in pots (some from seeds plus 4-5 dinnerplate dahlia tubers), because I expected to lose most of the in-ground ones due to the very heavy frosts last winter.

My in-ground ones have all survived, so the beds and borders are fairly full. The allotment will be getting a lot of dahlia plants this year!

This is the thread I need. Newbie gardener that wants dahlias, obviously too late this year but what's the secret?'

They're quick, cheap and easy to grow from seed too, if you don't want specific varieties. They don't come 'true' from seed, so each bloom is a surprise, making it a really fun hobby. I've gained some lovely dahlias this way and the plants produce tubers, so if you save the ones you like best, you'll have them forever. Dahlias also root really easily from cuttings, so that's another way to easily increase your plants.

Welcome!

News Flash - it isn't too late to get hold of some dahlia tubers (online or garden centre) and plant them. They'll soon be sprouting this weather. They are hungry when they're flowering, so make sure you include lots of rotted matter, eg compost and leaf mould if possible, plus plant food like Tomorite is ideal.

Keep them well watered this weather.

By now you'll probably be able to plant them straight in the ground rather than bringing them on indoors.

Stake them up before they're about 2-3 foot high as they get top heavy.

Really? Another novice here. Excellent, thank you. I thought I was looking at next year…

Yes mine are almost a foot tall. Last year got some beauties after a local very talented gardener told me to feed them twice a week with tomato feed. I found a fantastic one which also contains calcium

Is that a cafe au lait?

Had to pull one of my Dahlias out of the ground as it wasn't getting anywhere with the constant snail snacking! Looking happier in a pot already. I made a late purchase of some more tubers and they are coming up nicely. Just need some bigger pots for the patio!
