Hardy Geranium problem.

This hardy geranium is about 4 years old.
This year the roots are really dry and almost dead in a mound near the ground, while it’s flourishing and flowering!

It’s in full sun and has been faithfully watered, I promise!
it really doesn’t look good but I can’t find any advice on line.
Should I mulch with more soil, dig it out and replant deeper or is there another solution?

Peony for tax!!

I have found that's how some of them grow. If the plant is flourishing and looking happy I would leave it as it is. I think it has tiny roots that go into the soil to get what it needs and the big dry thing is the bit between them and the pretty. Maybe like an iris rhizome. Hopefully someone more in the know will be along soon.

Can I ask what tax means? I've seen it on FB and it's obviously to grab attention but where does the tax bit come from?

Thank you!
My geranium looks so sadly neglected, I feel as though I have to explain to visitors that it is much loved!

”Tax” is paid to draw attention and to say thank you for replying. 😊🌺

my peony was £4.99 in Lidl so I’m very excited to see these flowers.
My older peonies took a while to bloom.

I think that’s what they do. Mine get very leggy. You can cut it right back late autumn after flowering has finished, maybe add some more soil round the roots at that time , and it will grow back from ground level next year.

Mine goes a bit like that after watering because it flops and doesn't get quite so upright again after but is healthy. I think it helps to divide them every now and again too but I always forget when is best to do it - spring or autumn.

Thank you 😀

What a good buy your peony was.

I think it needs dividing. As plants age, the centre tends to die out and flower less. In the Autumn, cut back all of the foliage, lift the whole plant and chop up into smaller pieces with a spade or you may be able to pull it apart. Discard the oldest part. Replant with a bit of fertiliser added to the soil. Water in. Depending on the weather, I have split Geraniums after their first flush of flowers and they have settled back in well. You will have to be certain to keep well watered.

Thank you all, I will split them…I have more than one… in autumn.
i hope everyone and their garden are enjoying this weather, it’s been such a beautiful Spring 🌺🌸🌼

I have divided them at random times, over the years, and they’ve always survived. I dig up some when we moved house and it now grows in pots, waiting to be planted in the ground (I know it’s late!).

mine is geranium Roxanne. Do you think it will do well in partial shade, near the north wall? That’s the most convenient spot I have for it, and it would be great to have some ground cover under the camellia and the rhododendrons. It gets direct sun in the late afternoon. It used to be in full sun and it got huge and very leggy.

Rozanne? It does ok in shade, just doesn't flower as prolifically.

Yes, Rozanne. I didn’t notice the autocorrect :) Thanks @AlwaysGardening

We have Rozanne in a shady bed by a wall . It does fine, and does flower but it grows horizontally to reach the sun so looks a bit messy.
