Does anyone know name of this plant please.

I bought this plant i think last year or year before, it was full of lovely purple flowers. ( there were other colours at the shops).

I forgot to dead head / cut it down before winter. So just a couple of months ago i took the chance and cut it all down to short stems only,

It's really grown big and busy quickly but no flowers yet.
( previously bit smaller but tons and tons of flowers). It has blackish tones to.it not showing in pic

I can't recall it's name or instructions and wandering as I have neglected it, will it flower again of just get bigger and busy.
Thanks

My hydrangea flowers every year and the flower buds aren't showing at all yet, it is still a bit early.

Leave it alone and don't prune it now as the buds will be forming at the very tips of the stems.

I had a hydrangea in the garden which i killed after 3 years !
this one looks different to that.

You did the right thing not cutting your hydrangea back last year. The old flowerheads give the slightly tender growing tips a degree of frost protection, pruning is best left to spring for this reason.

If those photos are recent, it has flower buds on it already, so it is obviously quite happy.

If you go to a plant supplier website and put hydrangea in the search, you'll see just how much variety there is these days - it's quite astonishing the extensive choices offered now!

That’s definitely a hydrangea. Looks like one I have that flowers fairly late in the summer. There are flowers there, just keep it well watered and they will come.

Thank you
It's getting so much busier/ wide compared to last year.
It's in a small space at the front, shame I can't take some and plant elsewhere in the back, but I would probably kill it.

definitely hydrangea

Oxo01 · 18/05/2025 19:37

Thanks all
Yes It is a recent picture and it definatly appears to be doing well considering i just chopped it right down a few months.

I wanted to buy another so will have to find out this particular name/ type.

Can I take some off of it without digging it up, and replant elsewhere without killing it ?

its in a small spce so if it gets much wider it will be too much.

You can clone most plants by placing a cut shoot into water and waiting for roots to appear*. Usually within a couple of weeks, then pot up with potting compost. Probably won't be ready to plant out til next year though.

Googling "clone hydrangea" should give you plant-specific info.

I have a climbing hydrangea that hasn't flowered yet in 3 years, but it is in an extremely shady spot.

  • ETA change the water at least every other day

@MasculineProviderEnergy

Thanks I may try that.
