Novice confused- planters without holes?

I'm very much a novice gardener trying to work things out from zero knowledge base. At the weekend I bought some beautiful large planters from a car boot sale – three hoaxes ceramic ones and two made of plastic which look like wooden barrels.

I've just discovered that planters are supposed to have holes in the bottom but none of the ones that I've bought have holes in. I found them on Google, they retail for quite a lot of money so I'm assuming they're considered decent quality planters but from what I understand they are not much use without holes in the bottom?

I think I could probably make some holes in the bottom of the plastic/ faux wood ones, but I don't think there would be a way of making a hole in the ceramic ones.

Can anyone offer any advice about planters without holes please? Am I missing something?

Thank you

For indoor plants?

Not all planters should have holes in them at all. Depends on the plant and the siting of the planter.

If you have a plant that need very good drainage then don't over water and put some gravel in the bottom.

Indoor ones don’t have holes. Plastic outdoor ones I use a Braddle to punch holes in the bottom.

Use a cheap plastic pot with holes inside ceramic pots.. Or use a drill on plastic ones...

Yeah you drill a hole in the big plastic ones

If you put them outside with no holes the rain water will soak into them and the plants will drown and die.

So you either need to drill / stab holes in them or use them indoors or under cover (of a porch or something) outdoors.

I put a layer of small stones in the bottom of my planters for drainage and then compost. The stones stop the compost just running through and out the bottom where the holes are. And for indoor planters it stops the plants roots sitting in the water as they stay above the stones in the compost.

Good luck with your gardening.

You have to drill the holes for some planters, it’s just cheaper for the company to produce them without holes.

I just drill holes in plastic pots. I would put smaller flower pots with holes in inside the ceramic planters.

Maybe rest them on a few pebbles.

If you don't want to drill holes, you could find a normal plastic plant-pot (with holes in it) that fits inside your new ones. Put gravel in the bottom of your new ones, then put the plastic planter on top, with your plant planted in that - they'll have plenty of drainage and more insulation
