I know nothing about growing things. First attempt, all advice welcome!

No, not yet. What variety are they?

Assuming they're cordon types, look out for little leaves in the "armpits" and gently scrape those away before they start developing into shoots. I did mine for the first time today and yours look bigger so probably also have some already. You can still take the shoots off when they get bigger but it's wasted energy.

Looking at yours, yes, as Una says above. Some of your armpit branches are quite big but just bite the bullet and give them the chance to focus on the main stem.

As you have three plants in one grow bag you'll need to keep up with the watering and feeding (I know 3 is what they print on the bags and it's fine as long as you nurture them well).

Get rid of the side shoots now, but then you can wait until the trusses of tomatoes start to form, which will be July/August.

They are looking good and healthy, bigger than my plants!

I do need to know how you got them so big this early - mine are tiddlers compared!

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 12/05/2025 15:30

That's very impressive for a first attempt!

If you take the side shoots off and put them in a glass of water they will root all along the submerged stem. Pot them up and you'll have more plants for free.

There's actually 6 in here! Oops! Have been watering them with some tomato food that my DF gave me.

I grew them on a very sunny window sil until they were getting too big then popped them in the greenhouse tent. I put a cap full of the tomato food and water them once a day (probably too much as my toddler helps!)

This is the stuff my DF gave me...

When you say the shoots.....? I am an absolute novice and don't even know anything 🙃

Side shoots = armpit sprouts. Like this. Normally I take them out when they're smaller but I left this one to grow on for rooting. It's called pinching out because when they're tiny you can just pinched them off with your finger and thumb. When they're a bit bigger they snap off. The ones in my jar are pretty much ready for planting up, when I do I'll take most of the leaves off as the roots won't be able to support that much top growth until they get established. Pic of one I did yesterday.
