Planting a mature climbing Iceberg rose in the ground

I have a few years old climbing Iceberg rose in a pot. It used to be on a terrace, but it didn’t do too well, because it didn’t get much sun, and because it’s too big for a pot I guess! It has 5-6 very long stems and some side stems too, and it’s just started to flower now (sparsely).

Can I plant it now in the ground? I have a spot for it on south facing wall, under a pergola with wisteria. This means it will get plenty of sun, but also shade in the afternoon. It’s hot and dry where I am, so I wonder if it’s a good idea to plant it now. I worry that it will not do well in the pot, though, and I don’t have space on the terrace now, so need to find it a place anyway.

I would plant it out. When till it’s cooler in the evening make a much bigger hole that the pot. Lots of water before and after transplanting and some rose feed if you have it. Sure it will be much happier next year.

Thank you @Trueloveneverdies! Shall I prune it after planting, or leave it and prune in winter?

Wrong time of year for planting and pruning.

I’d plant it now and feed it. Lots of water. Then prune it next year. I have this rose and it’s pretty hardy. As long as you don’t shock it too much by not having a big enough hole I think it will be fine. Good luck, mine is going crazy with all this sun ☀️
