Why won't my Nerines grow?

RedAdmirals · 04/05/2025 13:08

I bought some Nerine Bowdenii bulbs half price at a garden centre 5 months ago.

I planted them in pots, left some outside and put some in the greenhouse,

Result - zilch. Not one single one has sprouted.

What went wrong?

Help !

Why were they reduced? My guess would be the bulbs were spoilt in some way and that’s why they were reduced and also why they haven’t sprouted.

I was getting a feeling they were duff.

Is it time to send them to the compost bin ?😢

Maybe buried too deep? The top of the bulb should show above the soil.

Yes, they are sticking above the soil.

They have new compost and have been watered (not drowned ! )

My experience is that they don't like being disturbed but do like being crammed in. Contrary little things, Nerines. Give them another year and leave them be.

vicarlady · 04/05/2025 15:59

Could be too early? Usually planted late spring to flower late summer? And plant with nose showing.

RedAdmirals · 04/05/2025 17:23

Is anything happening here?

Why won't my Nerines grow?

My nerenes always flower in September

summerscomingsoon · 04/05/2025 17:26

Wrong time of year. September October is best time

I had my Nerines in the garden for around five years before they actually flowered. Lots of leaves appeared but just no flowers.

Two years ago they finally produced several flower heads and they were beautiful. They are now in a pot, crammed in as I can't get them out even if I wanted to and they still flowered last year. I'm hoping they will bloom this year too.

deeahgwitch · 04/05/2025 17:41

Nerines come out in September where i live.

Nerines are temperamental, but once they are happy they will flower every Autumn. I planted some a few years ago and they grew leaves but no flowers and then died. They weren’t in a good spot for Nerines I now know.
Friend has them in a stony spot at the bottom of a wall, in full sun. They are spectacular there. I’ve just put a some in a different place in my own garden so we will see..
Yours should start shooting around now, you might get leaves but no flowers for a year or two, that is normal even in a spot they like. They hate wet and shade, they need sun through the Summer to flower as they come from Africa.

Whoopeee ! Hooray! 😄

Sorry to get overexcited but one of my Nerine bulbs has just produced a tiny sliver of a green shoot.

Let's hope the other 5 follow suit.....

That good OP, we have these in our garden, we don’t give them any special care but they flower every year & look stunning, they were here when we moved. I am excited at the moment as our alliums are blooming now. A garden is such a joy, in just a few days you notice changes, my DH works really hard on our garden.

Delighted for you but in Ireland they don’t seem to bloom until very late August/September.
Give them a chance 😀

MoistVonL · 09/05/2025 14:41

They are very late starters, don't worry, OP! I'm glad you have a shoot starting though.

Do you know why they are called Guernsey lilies? They are native to South Africa but a consignment on a ship to the UK had an accident and they fell into the sea near Guernsey and some took root when they washed ashore. They've spread ever since.

There was a a display about it at the Eden Project.

Don't worry, I have waited several months so I can wait a bit longer !
