I have a few hydrangeas in pots that I normally leave to it. This one only has one green shot vs the others which are super leafy. Is it dying?

Don’t give up on it! I think they need pruning regularly - not immediately after flowering, but RHS says prune in early spring down to the next buds, and for neglected shrubs (which this poor one is I think!) it says

  • Renovate overgrown or neglected shrubs by cutting off all the stems at the base. The new stems will not bloom until the following year

it's odd because I never do anything to them really & they have come back every year.

So I should chop the woody bits quite far down?

Where's the soil?! Surely it needs a bigger pot, and some soil?

elladella · 04/05/2025 10:41

the others are in the same pots with the same ericaceous soil. Maybe it does need more soil & a bigger pot, hence why i'm asking 😆

I'd repot it into a bigger one, cut off the dead heads and any woody stalks and then feed it a bit and see how it does.

Mine are going great guns this year. They like a lot of water but I only have a couple in pots, the rest in a border. Probably doesn't want to be standing in water.

Letshavetea1 · 04/05/2025 10:43

It’s not odd - it’s had enough of being starved. Prune it back, re-pot and feed with phostrogen. I agree with pp - there’s hardly any compost in there - poor thing!

Agree with all the above but in addition, have you been watering it?
Much of the country has been unusually dry since March so it is quite possible that it just needs a good drink (as well as more soil etc).

elladella · 04/05/2025 10:49

No, I haven't watered it much? I did this week as it's been hot.

I think that answers it, with a regular drink (until we get some rain again), it should come back.🌧️

We used to have two long established hydrangeas in our old house which we planted at the same time, one in a sunny, exposed spot but the other was much more sheltered being surrounded by bushes & trees.
The exposed one did really well becoming a monster with dozens of flower heads every year. The sheltered one was only half the size and in just a moderate dry spell would visibly wilt until given a good drink (when it would perk up in a matter of hours). The surrounding plants we taking all the water out of the ground and the poor hydrangea was loosing the battle for water.

thanks for all the advice

Needs repotting and pruning.
