Any proud fig tree owners around?

So I have a young fig tree (maybe 10 years old) in my garden next to a northwest facing wall. Every year it starts of with lots of figs but most of them remain small and never mature, then the tree drops them. Last year it managed to ripen 5 figs (improvement from 2 the previous year). It's in a flower bed with two other mature trees and a bush and all of them seem to be thriving, except for the limited crop from the fig. Any ideas how I can get it to ripen more fruit? I'm based in North West. Thank you!!

I get that with my fig tree, and mine is planted on a south facing wall - and I live right on the South Coast. It's about 30 years old. Most years I get one or two ripe figs, though on a couple of years out of the 30 I have had a stupidly huge crop.

I have no idea what the problem is and you have my sympathy!

Also awaiting advice...

Mine is the same. South facing garden, figs just fall off without ripening. It's a cutting from my grandma's tree though and she's no longer here so I keep it for sentimental value really!

Yup, I’ve got one on a S-facing wall too. It’s at least 20 years old as it was there when we bought the house. It’s a shrub rather than a tree. Usually get loads of figs, the wasps and birds get lots of them but mostly we get a decent few. We tend to miss them as the leaves hide the fruit.
Some years it goes bonkers and the crop is huge - one year I was giving them away, and I made a memorable fig and Pernod ice-cream (a Sophie Grigson recipe). The thing is - I don’t like figs! DH does, luckily.

PPs - they like their roots restricted, are yours planted in a bucket or something similar? No idea whether that might make a difference?

You might try thinning the figs - see if you get better results with only five or so on each branch. Also be careful of overfeeding or overwatering, especially in late summer.

We have one which is about twenty years old and faces due south. Until about three years ago we got lots of unripe figs which you can make into chutney.
Three years ago it all changed. In season we get 3/4 perfectly ripe figs every day. I think last year probably 150/170 in total. We live in the South, clay soil and I wish I could tell you the secret but honestly have no idea.

Mine has given me no reason to be proud! It was my lovely Grandma’s and it’s been leisurely doing nothing in a pot at my house for five years now. It looks happy enough though and makes me smile ❤️

There is no secret, sorry! It has a double layer of weed suppressant underneath and that’s it. The stones are granite and match my slabs.
