Removing bamboo

We have moved to a house with some bamboo in garden that we think is invasive. Does anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of it ourselves? Because of the position will be difficult to dig up.

Any suggestions or experiences would be great!

Unfortunately digging it up is probably the most effective way. We're tried cutting it back and applying strong weed killer directly to the cut stumps but it did nothing.

If it is possible you could alternatively try installing a bamboo barrier under the soil around the clump which would stop it spreading.

Dig it out and be very thorough to remove all scraps of roots. Then in following months/years roundup stump killer on any new shoots. Eventually victory will be yours!
It’s a nightmare but great that you are tackling it straightaway.

Dig it out - it's the only way.
We spent 3 years removing it from a border when we moved in.

It won't have done. Weedkiller is transported to the roots via the leaves. Without leaves, it won't work.

You can inject the weed killer into the stump. You have to cut the stalk and inject it immediately, as it heals within a minute and the solution won’t get through.

I was told this at Wisley, we had a forest of bamboo in France and it was the only thing which killed it.

I have finally killed off the bastard bamboo in my garden but I had to use tree and stump killer and I normally hate using chemicals. But it was the only thing that did the trick. I have now tried digging out the (dead) roots but they are spread quite wide and virtually impossible so will have to create a raised bed in order to plant anything else.

Thank you for all responses. We have spent afternoon digging and got first clump up which was so satisfying but a long way to go! Ordered some round up just in case - will avoid using if at all possible. Thanks again for all the help Smile
