Can anyone help identify these flowers please?
I moved into a new house last year and we found lot of little bulbs in the ground after removing a very very old wisteria that was causing the old fence to collapse. They were obviously being stifled by the wisteria as they didn’t come through last year. I thought maybe bluebells but not 100% as I am a very novice gardener.

Bluebells

Yes bluebells, and they look like the native ones rather than the dreaded invasive Spanish variety.

Op - you should download the app called plant net : you take a picture of the plant and it tells you what it is.

I'm dreadful at plants (never know what is and what isn't a weed!) but this app has helped me

They look like the Spanish variety to me

PollyannaWhittier · 23/04/2025 11:44

Definitely bluebells, if the pollen is blue or green they are Spanish (invasive), if it's white they are native.

They look like Spanish bluebells to me, too. Spanish bluebells are quite upright whereas English ones bend over gracefully.

Beware: they spread like mad!

milkshakeman · 23/04/2025 14:43

Thanks everyone! Pleased to know I was right. If they are Spanish, would you advise I getting rid of them? They are only in one area at the moment. I’ve got a lovely Hydrangea in the bed next to them, would hate this to be affected.

I wouldn't get rid of them. I have some Spanish bluebells in my garden. I didn't plant them but think they are lovely nonetheless. I think some people find they can take over but they are not overly spreading in my garden.

Spanish bluebells. Beautiful. Invasive or not, I’d keep them. They’re one of my favourites.

MoistVonL · 23/04/2025 14:55

English and Spanish can happily cross pollinate, so a large number of the bluebells in gardens these days are actually hybrids. Both are beautiful.

English bluebells only flower on one side of the stem. Yours look like they are flowering all around the stem, which suggests Spanish bluebells or a hybrid.
