Terrarium question

When I was a child, I used to see the terrariums in M&S in a round glass terrarium maybe in the 1980s and last week saw a similar one in Sainsburys and was very taken with it. Think it was £22.

Can the plants stay inside forever - are they miniatures or will they eventually need potting on so I would have to start again? I am very tempted to get one as love succulents and it feels very nostalgic to me.

Many thanks

Terrrariums are no good for succulents, which need more arid conditions and fresh air, most would rot inside such a container. The best plants for a terrarium are low growing moisture loving plants such as Fittonias, selaginella, and creeping fig. Over time they would outgrow the container, and need to be pruned back. Ready planted containers look lovely, but aren’t always very practical!
