Moss falling from my roof - can I use this in the garden?

Most days I'll find a clump of moss on the floor that has fallen from the roof, about the size of the palm of my hand. It looks fresh and interesting and looks as though it contains something interesting naturewise.

What can I do with these clumps? Put them around trees? Put them on soil in plant pots? They seem too precious to just discard.

Probably dislodged by corvids looking for nest material.

No harm in trying to use them for decorative purposes. Not sure they'll thrive but worth a try.

As PP said, probably birds doing it. The magpies love chucking it off our roof.

Not sure if it’s their way of saying “get your roof cleaned you mucky bugger”.

I'm pleased that the birds are involved in its deliverance

I collect moss from around my house to plant in the newly established woodland area of my garden. There are over 1000 varieties of moss - the ones local to you are the most likely to thrive in your garden.

And there might be tardigrades in the moss too!

Blackbirds chuck moss about with gay abandon while they are looking for things to eat. I use the moss to artistcally decorate the soil surface of my bonsai trees.

The blackbirds then thoughtlessly rearrange it for me

I put them round my acers in pots - some take - some don't....
