Please recommend 2 roses to go up an arch

We’re planning to erect a simple wooden rectangular arch to go from the gravel pit area to the greenhouse/veg area. We have recently added cattle troughs for pond plants either side of the path if that makes any difference.

The arch will be painted black & we’re planning wooden posts screwed together - maybe 7-8ft high. I’m a fan of David Austin & would like lots of flowers & highly scented if possible! Please recommend me your favourites, or offer alternative advice - many thanks 😁

I personally am dithering between blush noisette, wild eve and lady of the lake so if anyone wants to opine on those I’d be grateful for your experiences!

I have lady of the lake. Mine hasn't flowered as much as my strawberry hill but I love the sweet looking flowers.

Mr Lincoln. Bright red, scented

I have generous gardener by my front door and it smells divine, even my dp who usually can’t smell anything has commented on how beautiful it smells.

I have rambling rector in my apple tree and it is prolific but short lived, and really has gone rampant. It’s spread all along next doors fence as well. I wouldn’t put it on an arch.

Fabulous thread OP, moving to a new house soon (fingers crossed) with a wooden gazebo and a long wall and I'm hoping to grow a few climbing roses so this has given me lots of ideas. Thanks. 🌹

Please do report back with what you chose, OP!

Another vote for Generous Gardner. But if it’s not the right colour for you, spend time on the David Austin website, you can narrow your search down easily.

For an arch, I’d personally make sure you go for a climber rather than a rambler. Lots of rambling roses are beautiful, but they only flower once whereas climbers are repeat flowering.
