I have:
Bottom right - small diamthus plant.
Left - salvia
Back verbena
Middle rose shrub

Is the spacing OK? Should I change anything around?

Help me position the plants please

The salvia is salvia caradonna
Would that be better towards the back?

The labels will tell you how tall they grow and they do say taller at the back and smaller at the front. I like to put the odd tall plant at the front though.
I'd have about 20 plants in that border though🤣🤣

I want to add more but I read that I shouldn't plant anything too close to the rose which is why I am hesistant

I do have another pink salvia which I suppose I could add next to the purple one
And a campanula plant I can add next to the dianthus

You can fit far more in that space; I was also trying to find a nice way to say you need at least three of all those in there! While the rose is getting established it would probably like you to stay away from its skirts but I’d happily plant within 30cm or so of it.

If you are going for more then a bit of repetition does look better than one-of-everything; as a middle ground different colours of the same thing can give you more variety if that’s what you crave.

I’d pop in a few hardy geraniums - there are loads of lovely ones and they are very tough.

I have some lupins I purchased today, I have four of them in total - two white and two pink. Should I add those?

Plants I currently have that I can use
4 Lupins- 2 white and two pink
1 verbena
1 white delphinium
2 salvias - 1 purple and 1 pink
1 purple campanula
1 pink dianthus

People alway say taller at the back, but what happens is that they always lean forwards and cover up whatever is in front of them, so unless they spread really wide as well, they don't need to be at the back.

Also please don't feel bad, as a total newbie I would prefer the straight forward advice.

I heard a bit of the Gardeners Question Time programme a few weeks ago where they said that early in the year Jan /Feb I think, roses put out fibrous roots so don’t dig around them at that time or after that or you risk damaging them. I think that s why my roses have been a disaster. I’m not going near them this year and they look much healthier -so stay away from then from Jan onwards!

This is how it looks if i add the delphinium, campanula and pink silvia too.

Lupins get quite tall (up to 60cm) until about July, when they start to wilt and you can cut them back then. Delphiniums can be nearer the front. I would try and add in plants that flower later; you've got the rose already - maybe add dahlia or rudbeckia or something like that.

I think I will go with the two salvias and verbena and then once the rose Is abit more established fill the rest of the space with Hardy geraniums, perhaps next month.

Update: I decided to plant a delphinium and verbena at the back, salvias on the side and the dianthus at the front
My rose suffered from rust when I first planted it and hasn't grown much since, but if it survives and continues to grow il fill the gaps with hardy geraniums.
