Climbers on flat ground?

I’ve said there flat ground it’s not flat it’s ugly uneven crazy paving.
I’m on a budget so can’t replace it, I tried planting some creeping thyme seeds but they never germinated so I’m wondering if climbers would grow along it instead of upwards?
It’s north facing and shaded, would need to be hardy as I get the winds I haven’t a clue what to do with it, thanks for any advice I’m pretty clueless 😀

If you can knock out the cement between them there are plants that would look great in the gaps. Just google them and loads will come up.

Also you could try vinca, that sprawls out

Erigeron, mexican fleabane is a pink and white daisy. That would look really pretty.

I was going to suggest Vinca too! Also called Periwinkle. It vines outwards, and has lovely purple flowers. It’s also a perennial so will flower again next year and beyond.

Also came in to say vinca minor (periwinkle). It’s a perennial spreading at ground level.

Sound like a good place for Ivy

What you're looking for is described as 'creeping' or 'spreading', OP, not climbing. Have a google for creeping ground cover for shade and you'll get some ideas. Thyme needs dryness and sun, which could be why your previous go didn't work.

Agree with PP Fibrous that Mind-your-own-business could look lovely. I have it in my garden, bought as tiny plug plants (v good for stuffing into gaps) from Ebay.

There’s a good article here: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/jun/06/alys-fowler-plants-patio-cracks and also a list on the Sarah Raven website.

I have quite a sunny terrace and daisies, forget me nots, aubretia and (less so) camomile grow happily there, as do small lavender plants which self seed.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions will google them all now 😀

I agree with Mind Your Own Business. Perfect for between cracks in a shady area. It does spread like mad though so bear that in mind.

LovelyDaaling · 19/04/2025 15:25

Be wary of the mind-your-own -business if you plant it near a lawn. Once it gets into the lawn, you'll never get it out. Corydalis lutes and campanula portenschlagiana would make lovely groung cover. The campanula is evergreen.
