Fast-growing climbers?

We have recently moved and need to plant some climbers up the fence for privacy. Can anyone recommend a fast growing climber/ shrub - evergreen and scented if possible - but open to any suggestions. Complete novice here.

What is the fence’s position to the sun? Full/ partial sun or mainly in the shade?
Are you planting in a pot or the ground? Re privacy are you trying to prevent people looking through the fence or over it?

Our successful climbers are clematis, honeysuckle and a vine (need to remember the name, has red leaves in autumn it’s beautiful!)

You could get a rambling rose - Wedding Day is a nice one, lots of lovely flowers and scent. A thorned rose is good added protection for property - although you will need a chainsaw to keep it under control after a year or so!

An evergreen clematis such as winter beauty
Virginia creeper is quick growing but deciduous. Absolutely stunning colours at leaf fall though.

Yes, good questions: the back of the house faces north so I suppose the fence either side face east and west. They will be planted in the ground. It is to stop people looking over the top of the fence rather than through it.

Then you probably need something evergreen, so an evergreen clematis could work or, while not evergreen, a climbing hydrangea won't mind a certain lack of sun (plus they are great plants for attracting insects).

The trouble with anything fast-growing is that it doesn't stop at the height you want, it carries on growing. You'd be better off putting some trellis at the top of the fence, and attaching some rush screen to it. That would prevent people being able to see through. In the meantime, you can plant things which will eventually reach the height you want.
