What is this and why is it dying?!

Hi, my mil gave me three plants in pots. They were doing well in the pots, but now they’re in the ground they’ve started to die!!

I used compost when planting. The soil has always been pretty good for planting in. There’s an apple tree next to it, and a few weeds atm!

Can I salvage them?! Thanks

Is it a hebe? It’s probably thirsty? Did you water it in well when you planted it?

AlwaysGardening · 16/04/2025 22:13

Where had they been kept before planting out? Was the plant really soaked in the pot before planting? Has it been regularly watered since planting? They are Veronicas ( used to be Hebe)

It's been really dry so they probably needed watering until established. Salvageable.

It's definitely a Hebe, the can be fussy in a frost. Also, it's possible the apple tree is taking all the moisture from the surrounding ground, so consider moving it.

Thank you!

I was given them by mil approx 6 months ago and they’ve done well in their pots up until I put them in the ground!

I don’t water them before planting. I just dug a hole, placed it in and covered it up with compost. Then I watered it.
I’ve been giving them a good water over the dry spell last week. But have given up now! 🙄

I’ll dig them out and replace them back in pots for now…. Can I give them anything more than water to help?

Were the roots congested in the pots? i.e were the plants root bound when you planted them? If so, and unless the roots were teased out and the rootball was soaking wet, there's a good chance the roots are too dry now.

When you watered them after planting, how much water did you actually give them? Less than half a watering can per plant?

Dig one up and see what is going in with the roots. I would also eliminate all the weeds - eg dandelions - because as well as spoiling the display, they are competing for water and nutrients.

Fertilising the plants at this stage is not advisable, it will scorch dry roots.

Maybe you used the term ‘my bush’ 🤣🤣

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 18/04/2025 17:26

I’d dig one up, put the root ball in a bucket of water overnight, not in a pot, and see if it’s chirpy tomorrow. It looks low on water to me too.

Hebe, I find mine never survive the winter, they hate frosts so I wonder if it's struggled over the cold spell we had
