I purchased a queen of sweden DA rose at the start of April that is now covered in rust sadly. Are there any DA roses that you have found particularly disease resistant in your experience?

I've had Gertrude Jekyll here for several years and she's rarely been bothered by anything. She smells lovely too!

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 16/04/2025 14:13

I have a gertrude too so looking for something different but thank you.

On the disease resistant side I had Generous Gardener, Gentle Hermione, Olivia Rose Austin, Roald Dahl and Sceptered Isle although I’ve not had an issue with Queen of Sweden yet. I put in Penelope Lively last year next to some roses that get black spot and they succumbed too.
One non David Austin rose that I would thoroughly recommend is Champagne Moment which is very disease resistant.

Olivia! She is so healthy. Also Eustasia Vye. But maybe you’re not looking for another pink? I confess I have over 40, so can advise 😂

My Gertrude Jekyll is a nightmare with Black Spot. She’s on probation this year. Going to pull her out if we have another summer like last.

Generous Gardner, Mary Delaney and Albrighton Rambler have been fab with nothing.

Olivia Rose Austin had a little Black Spot but responds well to pruning off leaves and mulching.

Not in any position to judge the quantity 😅

Most of mine get a bit of black spot as the summer rolls on, but as long as they’re growing well I tend to feed, water, and carry on.

My least affected are probably Hansa (can’t remember if that’s actually DA, but bought it from them) and Vanessa Bell which is one of my favourites.

Elizabeth, Roald Dahl and Eustacia Vye are completely disease free for me in rainy North Wale.

@Rosemaryandlavender1 seems to help planting lavender/rosemary/small-leaved salvias round the roses.

FondantFancyFan · 16/04/2025 19:05

I've just bought a rambling DA rose, Alexandre Girault, so don't know if it's prone to diseases yet. Will keep you posted.

Vanessa Bell is marvellous isn't it!

The only rose in our garden that has never shown signs of disease is Arthur Bell.
It's a hybrid tea - golden yellow fading to cream. Lovely fragrance.

Rosemaryandlavender1 · 17/04/2025 11:44

Thank you all, I have removed the fungus leaves of the queen if sweden and ordered a fungus spray -roseclear. If that doesn't do the trick then I am liking the look of Vanessa Bell.

I'm rambling going to plant my new DA rose, Alexandre Girault, over the weekend so will look out for signs of disease.

BestIsWest · 17/04/2025 21:30

Elizabeth, Emily Brontë, Desdemona and Genereous Gardener.

DadnotMom · 09/10/2025 16:32

Disease resistance in roses often depends on location. Roses that are completely free of Black spot in Western states and loaded with black spot in the more humid East Coast. Best to find opinions from people close to your area of the country. I live in Massachusetts with a lot of disease pressure. For me, these do well but all get some black spot at end of season. Eustacia Vye, Silas Marner, Bring me Sunshine, Gabriel oak, desdemona, Queen of Sweden, James Galway, Clair Austin, Windermere, poets wife, lady shallot, Olivia, Elizabeth, Princess Ann.

nettie434 · 09/10/2025 23:12

I am quite pleased with Emma Bridgewater. It's another pink rose. (How splendid to have more than 40 pink roses @thecomedyofterrors or similar @sockfluffinthebath.
There is no such thing as too many scented pink roses). My Queen of Sweden bought at the same time is looking a bit miserable, even though she looked wonderful when she came out of the box.

I have bought a rose tonic (a gloriously old fashioned term) and do mean to give them a slug of it before autumn sets in.

Blingismything · 09/10/2025 23:43

James Galway is a good disease resistant one for me. Wont’s show pics of my 60+ DAs.

TeddySchnauzer · 10/10/2025 00:30

Rambling Rector has thrived here!

TeddySchnauzer · 10/10/2025 00:31

Oh and my mum has Emma Bridgewater and it’s not had anything either

gillybombilly · 10/10/2025 00:37

Nye Bevan, Charles Darwin and Sceptred Isle roses are beautiful, as is Queen Of Sweden for me.

Olivia Rose, Penelope Lively and Bring Me Sunshine have been very disappointing, but I may try them again next year.

clinellwipe · 10/10/2025 11:11

My bring me sunshine has been a huge healthy monster this year - it’s my youngest DA rose and by far the biggest. This is in West Midlands.

Well if you change your mind about showing pics of your DA roses, I would be delighted! I am imagining your garden as being like the rose gardens in Regent's Park or Mottisfont.
