Does anyone else take their seedlings on holiday? holiday?

We're going away for a few days (in the UK) at the weekend. I have a couple of small trays of seedlings just starting. I could give them to a friend to look after but it seems easier just to take them with us. A couple of years ago DH took some tomato seedlings away.

Are we the only ones or is this normal gardeners behaviour?

Argh! No idea how I typed holiday? twice and it seems we can't edit titles. Sorry.

I either wait till I get back or use that capillary matting with a water source to keep things watered for a while. I like the idea of taking plants on a holiday though. Do you take them round gardens when you go out?

GooseberryBeret · 14/04/2025 08:16

No, but that is really cute! I love the idea of taking them to see gardens.

heldinadream · 14/04/2025 08:16

Can't remember taking seedlings but have defo taken house plants on holiday.
Not weird at all!🪴

MumChp · 14/04/2025 08:17

My mum did!
Way to important to trust me with.

I've no idea but this thread has really brightened my morning! Please do take your seedlings OP and report back, I want to hear what they got up to!

RedVanYellowVan · 14/04/2025 09:01

Ha! They'll have a very boring time, just sitting on the windowsill. Although perhaps they would like an hour or two at the beach.

I've been looking closely at the cottage details. I have no interest in the kitchen inventory or how many pillows there are. But how wide the windowsills are, and which will - hopefully - be the sunniest is Very Important Information.

I love this. I’d totally do it.

Iambouddicca · 14/04/2025 09:07

Love it - I don’t think they’d be happy at the beach- far too windy… and as for salt spray.

taking them around gardens sound good - but might be difficult for their self esteem- know what going around Wisley does to me!

Although - I’m imagining a variation on one of those pet buggies- the kind people use for elderly chihuahuas- except modified to house a mini greenhouse

Iambouddicca · 14/04/2025 09:09

Also thinking if a new check list on the holiday rentals-
-pet friendly
-children welcome
.house plant friendly
~greenhouse
~heated greenhouse!

Really!?Shock
Won't they get hot and stressed in the car? And the implications of sudden braking don't bear thinking about...

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2025 09:14

Nice idea, I think I’d be worried about them overheating if we got stuck on the motorway. Or disasters if we had to do an emergency stop.
If its just a few days or a week, a good soak before you go, capillary matting and maybe don’t leave in the brightest south facing window should be ok.

DizzyWaltzer · 14/04/2025 09:24

A bit bigger, but I bring my supermarket herbs with me when we go away in our motorhome, just put them in a shaded bit of the van. Saved a “mint” as i can keep them alive instead of drying out at home!

It's clearly time for another coffee

no, they get their own mini break in the sink or in the bathtub. They get carsick and would not appreciate a change of location..

Neighbour has a key in case it's been too warm and they need a top up drink!!

makes sense in a motorhome!

OP, you've bought images of you sitting in economy with a tray of seedlings on your lap.

mummymummymummummum · 14/04/2025 14:42

I’ve just come back from a week away. I checked the weather back home daily, and was convinced my cosmos seedlings would have died due to lack of water. And was worried about other pots. If I’d had room for them that would have been a load off my mind!

Everything was fine, but appreciated a big drink!

RedVanYellowVan · 14/04/2025 14:50

Lovely and very funny replies. No, I won't actually take them to the beach but they are tiny little things, most of them only hatched yesterday so will travel well. I'll pack them carefully and they can sit in the rear footwell. I don't think the weather in the UK is going to be an overheating risk.

Just a car trip, no sitting in economy for them. Although going on the tube at the end of the last day of the Chelsea Flower Show is hilarious. People trying to wield enormous plats that they impulse bought at the sell-off.
