Sunflowers, an idea I'll regret?

I used to love my garden. It was a beautifully tranquil place full of muted colours, which DH and I enjoyed working on together.

Then he died and I was overwhelmed for a few years just keeping DC and me going. The (large) garden was sadly neglected.

I've decided this year is my year to get it back in order. I started by employing a "man" to clear everyhing, which he has done and it looks much better for at least being tidy, but if I'd taken more time/interest there have probably been things removed that could have been kept.

So, for this summer, while I find out what (if anything) grows back. I was thinking of sunflowers everywhere.

Tall ones at the back of borders and short multi branch ones in the front and in pots. Cheerful and a complete contrast to "before".

But will it create problems for future years?

Is it actually likely to be successful?

Wot about rudbeckia, the yellow annual ones. You can just do seed. They are nice and cheery and none of the sunflower issues. Good for bees too

It won’t create a problem for future years but be careful of your varieties so you don’t have to stake everything and beware it’s going to be lots of watering.

God it sounds wonderful! What a lovely idea! I've had no success at all with sunflowers over the years but I absolutely love them so I think it would look amazing!

why should sunflowers create problems? I have them on my allotment as they are good for wildlife and the smaller ones for cut flowers. they sometimes self seed so i get free ones the next year. have you got a sunny garden as they dont like shade

Yes, it's the self seeding I was concerned about. Next year they might be weeds 🤣

maybe i should add that i am a very lazy gardener and they have coped fine with my neglect....though agree taller ones could do with staking especially if you are somewhere windy

No they dont self seed to that extent. or at least mine never have. we are talking one or two plants on allotment plot

What problems? I plant them every year! They make me so happy and the bees love them.
