Can I sow sunflower seeds in my lawn?

I know this might sound like a daft question but I have a packet Of sunflower seeds but not a flower bed for them.
Can I just make little holes on the edge of my lawn where I want them to grow and push the seeds in?

Of course, why did you think this wouldn’t be possible?

EducatingArti · 09/04/2025 15:36

Yes, but don't mow over them!

Because there's still grass around it? I don't know I have never grown them before

They need an open sunny area..most will need some kind of support..if you direct sow,you risk slugs, mice or birds eating them..I grow them in little pots, coffee cups will do and put them in the flower bed when they're about 6 inches high.

Has anyone ever done this before on here? Whenever I looked online i could only find in pots or in flower beds.

It's not a great recipe for success. As above, they need it to be quite warm for outside sowing, the seeds are delicious to both birds and mice etc, and the green growth is very attractive to slugs. I would start them like @Nannyfannybanny says and plant them out later on.

Maybe protect shoots with a closh ?

As PPs have said the slugs will eat them before they have a chance to grow if you plant them direct when they are seeds or too small. Some good ideas here for protecting them. When you have them 6 ins or more high, plant direct into the side of the lawn as you are planning, but you will still need some kind of anti-slug tactic eg slug pellets all around or other methods

I think pps are right - if you lut them in the grass small chance they will make it out before they are eaten - though in this dry weather, not impossible if you push them in to hide from birds. Start some in pots though (yoghurt pots with holes made in the bottom are good). In the meantime I might dig the grass out of a few patches where I want to grow them, so the mower doesn't have to get too close after they are planted out. Then pick the sturdiest ones at at least 6" high to plant out.
Water them in the mornings to give them the best chance of avoiding those damp-loving slugs.

Thanks all for the help, I have a large unused trough with soil so I have made some holes and put some seeds in there too.

Cloches are really expensive even plastic ones, and that doesn't stop slugs getting at plants from underneath.
