As per the title which gardens that are open to the public do you like to visit?
One of my favourites is Felley Priory just off the M1. Currently full of beautiful magnolias and hellebores with loads of tree peonies about to come out.

I like kitchen gardens the most. Slightest hint of a kitchen garden and I’m keen.

Harlow Carr for its apple tree walkway with windows I to the veg and herb beds, Bridgewater for its superb walled gardens.

We are members of the National Trust and English Heritage so any/all of those! Obviously my garden will never be like theirs but I try to look at detail that I could copy e.g. a particular plant, a planting/colour scheme, a shady corner, a dry area, etc.

I think my favourite gardens (that are definitely beyond the 'could you recreate this at home?') are the bonkers ones like Portmeirion, Biddulph Grange, Hawkstone Park (Shropshire) or Brodsworth Hall (Yorks).

Back out to the gardening now. I only came in to make a 4 o'clock cup of tea with a little something.Grin

Oh, and I like NGS Open Days. They are relatable.

Walmer Castle and Gardens, Kent, lovely, tranquil and Sissinghirst of course,
many remarkable gardens in the Garden of England, Kent

My favourite NT garden near me. I don't think it's that well known, it's not huge for a NT property but absolutely beautiful. We're going tomorrow!

Then of course there's Sissinghurst, which can't be beat.

I'll take some pics tomorrow at Courts and come back here and post some. 😊

I love the gardens at Newby Hall in North Yorkshire, they are absolutely exquisite. In Scotland the gardens at Cawdor Castle in Nairnshire are fabulous.

Went to Courts Gardens today if anyone is still looking at this thread? 😍

West Dean Gardens in West Sussex is lovely. It also has the most beautiful walled fruit and veg garden with old fashioned greenhouses.

BestIsWest · 06/04/2025 18:53

Aberglasney. I love it there.

Local NGS gardens. York Gate near Leeds is absolutely lovely.

KingscoteStaff · 06/04/2025 20:31

Which is that one near York with sweeping meadowy grasses - designed by that Dutch bloke?

Feel I'm a bit low on info, really...

KingscoteStaff · 08/04/2025 08:51

That’s the one!

Now I just need to work out how to create the waving grassy prairie effect in my terraced house back garden…

So beautiful, though.

Love kitchen gardens, any walled gardens but the herbaceous borders at Arley Hall in Cheshire are mind blowing, and also Bluebell cottage for their borders and huge amount of knowledge
sissinghurst, gravetye and the Newt are on my bucket list to visit

Probably quite tricky without a larger space but if you want to DM me for some ideas, feel free, it's my day to day trade!

Great Dixter. Dynamic, inspiring, hugely biodiverse and sensational in every way. Orchestrated and overseen by Fergus Garrett, the Lionel Messi of British gardening.

TheGander · 02/05/2025 21:02

Just been to Great Dixter today for the first time. Hands down the most inspirational garden I’ve ever seen. You feel you are in a slightly different dimension where everything is that bit more vivid and alive, yet timeless. Bravo.

Wisley as they test there. The beds of tulips are gorgeous. But my garden is tropical so Kew always good for that, though frankly I mostly use Pinterest.

Trentham Gardens which are fairly close to the M6.

Blahblahmama1 · 13/05/2025 00:33

East Rushden Old Vicarage Garden in Norfolk. Stunning, inspirational and exquisite in equal measure.

Myblueclematis · 13/05/2025 08:55

I'm going to Exbury Gardens in the New Forest tomorrow, I haven't been there for about five or six years. Looking forward to it, hoping there will still be loads of colour from the rhododendrons and azaleas.

I think I bought a plant when I was there last time, I just know that I will be buying another one tomorrow.

Also, Stansted House and Park is another place I like to go, they have a lovely walled garden, a large garden centre and the cafe is very nice too.
